Beginning next month, the USDA will publicly disclose the names of retailers to which recalled meat and poultry was distributed in any class I recall.
Until now, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) refused to release the names of retailers selling recalled meat. While they have always released the names of the manufacturers, much of the meat is repackaged and resold under store brands (see Kroger meat recall, etcetera…), thus leaving consumers in the dark about whether the meat they purchased from a certain store could have possibly been part of a recall.
This broken policy has been widely criticized by consumer watchdog groups and the media – including right here on US Recall News – for possibly contributing to many more illnesses and deaths as a result of consumers not being made aware that the meat in their refrigerator was part of a recall.
