Risperdal is a drug manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. It was developed and originally approved in 1993 to be used as an antipsychotic medication. However, soon after receiving its original FDA-approval, Janssen began to market Risperdal to those who were not originally intended to take the drug; particularly the elderly and children.
Risperdal has since lost is patent, but before this occurred it caused horrible side effects to thousands of Americans. One of the most prominent side-effects from taking Risperdal is that it can cause male children and adolescents to develop breast tissue, a condition known as gynecomastia.
The first young man to win a case against Risperdal’s manufacturer happened in Philadelphia, where $2.5 million was awarded by a jury.
