Rapid Breathing, Confusion, and Lethargy: Symptoms or Side Effects?

September 11, 2009 By E. Sizemore

rapid-breathingRapid breathing, confusion, and lethargy are often symptoms of conditions or diseases such as anxiety or metabolic acidosis, but could also be side effects associated with certain medications. Metabolic acidosis itself can be a side effect of some medications such as Zonegran. Below is a list of diseases and conditions associated with symptoms like rapid breathing, confusion, and fatigue, as well as a list of medications related to similar side effects.

We are not medical professionals, and these may not be comprehensive lists. Please contact your doctor if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms or side effects, or similar health issues.

Rapid Breathing, Confusion, and Lethargy Could Be Symptoms Of:

Metabolic Acidosis: Metabolic acidosis causes the blood to be too acidic. It can be fatal. Kidney failure, poisoning, diabetes, shock, and certain medications including Zonegran and Avandia can cause metabolic acidosis. Symptoms of metabolic acidosis can include rapid breathing, confusion, lethargy, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

Meningitis: Meningitis is usually caused by some kind of infection. It is inflammation of the tissue and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis can cause rapid breathing, confusion, lethargy, and other symptoms such as fever, headache, and seizures.

Low Blood Pressure: The risks of high blood pressure are well known, but low blood pressure low blood pressure can also be very dangerous. Low blood pressure can cause fainting and dizzy spells. It can also cause the brain, heart, and other organs to be deprived of oxygen. Rapid breathing, fatigue, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, and depression can all be signs of low blood pressure.

Pneumonia: Pneumonia can be a life-threatening illness. It is inflammation of the lungs, and is usually secondary to another health problem such as an infection. Pneumonia can cause rapid breathing, sometimes the only symptom in children. In older adults confusion and lethargy may be the only noticeable signs.

Anxiety: Many people who cope with anxiety and panic attacks feel as though they suffer alone, but anxiety affects 40 million adults in the US alone. Rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, trouble concentrating, feelings of fear or dread, irritability or rage, tremors and twitches, sweating, fatigue and insomnia are all symptoms of anxiety.

Heat Stroke: Heat stroke can be fatal. Dehydration is often involved. Certain medications, including can increase your risk of heatstroke. These medications include, Thorazine, Zyprexa, Benadryl, Elavil, and many more.

Rapid Breathing, Confusion, and Lethargy Are Side Effects Associated With:

Zonegran: Zonegran is used in combination with other medications to reduce the frequency of partial epileptic seizures. Zonegran can cause side effects including metabolic acidosis, anorexia, dizziness, headache, and irritability

Topamax: Topamax is used to prevent seizures and migraine headaches. Among the many side effects, Topamax can cause metabolic acidosis. It can also cause memory problems, anorexia, numbness, tingling, burning or other strange skin sensations.

Avandia: Avandia is used to control blood sugar levels in Type 2 Diabetes by improving the body’s response to insulin. Rapid breathing, confusion, and lethargy, when taking Avandia, can be signs of other, more dangerous side effects of the drug including high blood sugar, low blood sugar, and heart problems.
