Neocate baby formula has been linked to low phosphorus levels, bone fractures and rickets in infants. Neocate is amino acid-based formula made for babies and young children with severe food allergies including those who are allergic to cow’s milk, soy and other foods. There are several varieties. Infants and children whose primary source of nutrition is Neocate, may be at risk for bine fractures, skeletal deformities and rickets. If your child has been harmed by Neocate, you may be able to recover compensation.
Study Finds Neocate Associate with Low Phosphorus and Bone Disease
A study published in 2017, looked at data for 51 children who had been diagnosed with hypophosphatemia, most of whom had been fed a diet solely consisting of Neocate formula products. Researchers found that 94% had bone “fractures, undermineralization, or rickets.” Those who could change to a different formula began to improve shortly after the switch. Researchers recommend that the mineral metabolism of infants and children who are fed amino-acid based elemental formula be carefully monitored.
Dangers of Low Phosphorus
Infants and children with low phosphorus levels can develop:
- Broken bones
- Skeletal deformities
- Muscle weakness
- Poor growth
When phosphorus levels are returned to normal, children may improve, but some will suffer injuries that require surgery, and even after surgery some deformities are permanent. If your child has been harmed by Neocate, you may be able to recover compensation that will pay for their medical care and other needs.
