Catfood and Dogfood products from three major pet food brands have been added to the list of pet food recalls as of today, April 3, 2007.

The three newest additions to the recalled dog and cat food list are Del Monte, Nestle Purina PetCare Company, and Hill’s Pet Nutrition. All three companies issued voluntary recalls over the weekend.
The pet food recall now includes a variety of prescription dry cat food called Hill’s Prescription Diet M/D Feline.
These products were contaminated with “Wheat Gluten-Containing Melamine,” which is not approved for use in pet food. A state lab in New York accounced on March 23 that it had found aminopterin, an ingredient in rat poison, in the wheat gluten it tested in pet food.
Pet owners are advised to be aware of the signs of kidney failure in dogs and cats.
Chronic Failure of the Kidneys
Increased thirst and urine volume
Weakness and lethargy
Easily bleeds and/or bruises
Weight loss
Acute Failure of the Kidneys
Dehydration (gently pull the skin away from the dog or cat. If the skin does not immediately spring back, the pet my be dyhydrated).
Stiff-legged walk and arched back (a sign of painful kidneys)
Little or no urine production
