Ikea has issued a recall for their VYSSA crib mattress, as the mattresses can create a gap between the themselves and the crib ends. The possible gap is larger than allowed by federal regulations, and poses an entrapment risk to the infants.
The company has already received two reports of infants found entrapped between the mattress and an end of a crib, and the children were removed from the gap without injury. However, parents need to inspect the recalled mattress by measuring the gap – if it is any larger than the width of two fingers between the ends of the crib and the mattress, they are encouraged to stop using the recalled mattresses and return it to any IKEA store for an exchange or a full refund.
This recall involves roughly 169,000 IKEA VYSSA style crib mattresses with the following five model names:
VACKERT
VINKA
SPELEVINK
SL?—A
SLUMMER
The recalled mattresses were manufactured on May 4, 2014 or earlier. An identification label attached to the mattress cover has the date of manufacture in Month-DD-YYYY format and the VYSSA model name. As stated above, a gap between the mattress and crib ends larger than two finger width is an indication of a defective mattress.
The mattresses were purchased from IKEA stores nationwide and online at www.ikea-usa.com from August 2010 to May 2014 for about $100.
