HSN LP (previously known as Home Shopping Network), of St. Petersburg, FL has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $875,000 to settle allegations that their shopping channel failed to report in a timely manner on serious injuries and hazards associated with the Welbilt Electronic Pressure Cooker sold on the show.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission alleged that HSN received 25 (possibly more) reports from consumers alleging that the Welbilt pressure cookers were defective and dangerous. Law (Consumer Product Safety Act) requires that such information be reported immediately, yet the CPSC alleges that HSN did not contact them after receiving such reports from September 2001 all the way through October of 2004.
After finally receiving notification about the reports in June and October of 2005, the CPSC recalled the defective pressure cookers.
In agreeing to settle this matter, HSN denied CPSC allegations that it violated the Consumer Product Safety Act.
