February 20, 2009 By The FDA Leave a Comment

CONTACT: JOSEPH PITITTO (516) 237-6131

1-800-FLOWERS.COM, INC. ANNOUNCED IT IS VOLUNTARILY RECALLING FOUR (4) SNACK TRAY PRODUCTS THAT SOME CUSTOMERS MAY HAVE RECEIVED FROM 1-800-FLOWERS.COM PRIOR TO JANUARY 28, 2009 BECAUSE THE DRY AND HONEY ROASTED PEANUTS CONTAINED IN THESE PRODUCTS (WHICH WERE SUPPLIED BY TORN RANCH OF NOVATO, CA) MAY CONTAIN PEANUTS FROM PEANUT CORPORATION OF AMERICA (PCA). FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE PCA RECALL, VISIT THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION ONLINE AT HTTP://WWW.FDA.GOV.

PCA HAS ANNOUNCED THE EXPANSION OF A VOLUNTARY RECALL COVERING ALL PEANUT PRODUCTS MADE IN THEIR BLAKELY, GEORGIA PLANT SINCE JAN. 1, 2007, BECAUSE THEY HAVE A POTENTIAL TO BE CONTAMINATED WITH SALMONELLA.SALMONELLAIS AN ORGANISM WHICH CAN CAUSE SERIOUS AND SOMETIMES FATAL INFECTIONS IN YOUNG CHILDREN, FRAIL OR ELDERLY PEOPLE, AND OTHERS WITH WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEMS. HEALTHY PERSONS INFECTED WITH SALMONELLA OFTEN EXPERIENCE FEVER, DIARRHEA (WHICH MAY BE BLOODY), NAUSEA, VOMITING AND ABDOMINAL PAIN. IN RARE CIRCUMSTANCES, INFECTION WITH SALMONELLA CAN RESULT IN THE ORGANISM GETTING INTO THE BLOODSTREAM AND PRODUCING MORE SEVERE ILLNESSES SUCH AS ARTERIAL INFECTIONS (I.E., INFECTED ANEURYSMS), ENDOCARDITIS AND ARTHRITIS. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON SALMONELLA, PLEASE VISIT THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION’S WEBSITE AT HTTP://WWW.CDC.GOV.

RECENTLY, TORN RANCH RECALLED ITS DRY AND HONEY ROASTED PEANUT PRODUCTS BECAUSE THEY MAY CONTAIN PEANUTS SUPPLIED BY PCA.  TORN RANCH HAS INDICATED THAT THEY ARE NOT AWARE OF ANY REPORTED CASES OF ILLNESS RELATED TO THESE PRODUCTS.  1-800-FLOWERS.COM HAS NOT RECEIVED ANY REPORTS OF ILLNESS CONNECTED TO THE BELOW LISTED SNACK TRAY PRODUCTS CONTAINING PEANUTS.  WE ARE UNDERTAKING THIS VOLUNTARY RECALL OUT OF AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION.

THIS VOLUNTARY RECALL DOES NOT AFFECT ANY OF OUR PRODUCTS CONTAINING PEANUT PRODUCTS SOLD AFTER JANUARY 28, 2009 NOR ANY OTHER PRODUCTS FROM 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT CONTAIN PRODUCTS FROM PCA.

THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS AND PRODUCT CODE NUMBERS FOR THE RECALLED PRODUCTS ARE LISTED ON THE TABLE ON THE FOLLOWING PAGE.  PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE AT WWW.1800FLOWERS.COM TO HELP WITH IDENTIFICATION.
