Forward Foods Recalls DETOUR Bars Containing Roasted Peanuts

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — MINDEN, NEVADA, JANUARY 30, 2009 — FORWARD FOODS LLC TODAY ANNOUNCED A VOLUNTARY RECALL OF DETOUR® BRANDED BARS THAT CONTAIN ROASTED PEANUTS PURCHASED FROM PEANUT CORPORATION OF AMERICA (PCA). PCA IS THE FOCUS OF AN INVESTIGATION BY THE U.S. FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION (FDA) CONCERNING A RECENT SALMONELLA OUTBREAK THOUGHT TO BE CAUSED BY TAINTED PEANUT PRODUCTS. PCA HAS INFORMED FORWARD FOODS THAT THERE IS RISK THAT ROASTED PEANUTS SUPPLIED BY PCA MAY HAVE BEEN CONTAMINATED WITH SALMONELLA.

CERTAIN DETOUR PRODUCTS LISTED BELOW ARE BEING RECALLED OUT OF AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION BECAUSE THEY CONTAIN ROASTED PEANUTS MANUFACTURED BY PCA.  REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLES OF OUR PRODUCTS ARE ROUTINELY TESTED BY AN INDEPENDENT LABORATORY AND ALL TESTING TO DATE HAS INDICATED NO SALMONELLA CONTAMINATION IN ANY DETOUR PRODUCTS. FORWARD FOODS LLC IS TAKING THIS PRECAUTIONARY STEP TO PROTECT THE SAFETY OF OUR CONSUMERS.

SALMONELLA IS AN ORGANISM WHICH CAN CAUSE SERIOUS AND SOMETIMES FATAL INFECTIONS IN YOUNG CHILDREN, FRAIL OR ELDERLY PEOPLE AND OTHERS WITH WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEMS. HEALTHY PERSONS INFECTED WITH SALMONELLA OFTEN EXPERIENCE FEVER, DIARRHEA (WHICH MAY BE BLOODY), NAUSEA, VOMITING AND ABDOMINAL PAIN. IN RARE CIRCUMSTANCES, INFECTION WITH SALMONELLA CAN RESULT IN THE ORGANISM GETTING INTO THE BLOODSTREAM AND PRODUCING MORE SEVERE ILLNESSES SUCH AS ARTERIAL INFECTIONS (I.E., INFECTED ANEURYSMS), ENDOCARDITIS AND ARTHRITIS.

DETOUR PRODUCTS HAVE NOT BEEN LINKED TO ANY INCIDENTS OF SALMONELLA, AND WE ARE NOT AWARE OF ANY ILLNESSES THAT HAVE BEEN LINKED TO OUR PRODUCTS.

NO OTHER DETOUR PRODUCTS OR FLAVORS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL.

THESE PRODUCTS WERE SOLD IN GROCERY, DRUG, WAREHOUSE, AND OTHER RETAIL STORES THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA AS WELL AS OVER THE INTERNET, BUT ARE BEING REMOVED FROM DISTRIBUTION.

“ENSURING THE SAFETY OF OUR CUSTOMERS AND CONSUMERS IS OUR HIGHEST PRIORITY, WE ARE DOING ALL WE CAN TO MAINTAIN THEIR TRUST,” SAID PATRICK MULDOON, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, FORWARD FOODS LLC.

CONSUMERS WHO HAVE PURCHASED THE RECALLED PRODUCTS ARE URGED TO DISCARD THEM WITHOUT OPENING BUT YOU SHOULD CUT OFF THE BACK FLAP OF THE WRAPPER ON THE BAR FOR USE IN REQUESTING REPLACEMENT PRODUCT. IF MULTI-BAR TRAYS OR PACKAGES WERE PURCHASED, CUT OUT THE UPC CODE FOUND ON THE SIDE OR BACK OF THE TRAYS OR PACKAGES. THESE FLAPS AND ANY CUT OUT UPC CODES SHOULD BE RETAINED FOR FUTURE USE. DETAIL ON THE LOCATION OF THE BACK FLAP OR UPC CODES ARE ON OUR WEBSITE.

CONSUMERS WHO PURCHASED OTHER DETOUR FLAVORS, OR THOSE PRODUCTS MENTIONED ABOVE THAT HAVE ENJOY BY DATES AFTER MARCH 1, 2010 ARE NOT AFFECTED BY THIS RECALL.
