VELVET BEGAN ASKING STORES TO PULL THE NOVELTY ITEM FROM SHELVES FRIDAY. VELVET LAUNCHED THE RECALL AFTER THE PEANUT CORPORATION OF AMERICA BEGAN A VOLUNTARY RECALL THURSDAY OF ALL PEANUTS AND PEANUT PRODUCTS PROCESSED SINCE JAN. 1, 2007, AT ITS BLAKELY, GA., FACILITY.
THE RECALL WAS INITIATED BY VELVET SUPPLIERS, FIELDBROOK FOODS OF DUNKIRK, N.Y., AND ICE CREAM SPECIALTIES OF LAFAYETTE, IND., WHICH MANUFACTURE THE PRODUCTS UNDER AN AGREEMENT WITH VELVET. THE CONES ARE SPRINKLED WITH CRUSHED PEANUTS.
LUCONDA DAGER, VICE PRESIDENT OF VELVET, STRESSED THAT VELVET DOES NOT PURCHASE PRODUCTS OR INGREDIENTS FROM THE PEANUT CORPORATION OF AMERICAN. ALL OTHER VELVET SUPPLIERS HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THE PRODUCTS THEY PROVIDE TO VELVET DO NOT ORIGINATE FROM THE PEANUT CORPORATION OF AMERICA.
“SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE SALMONELLA OUTBREAK, VELVET HAS INDEPENDENTLY COMPLETED ADDITIONAL TESTING OF ITS MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS CONTAINING PEANUTS, PEANUT BUTTER OR ANY PEANUT BYPRODUCT, AND EVERY TEST HAS RETURNED NEGATIVE RESULTS FOR THE CONTAMINATION,” DAGER SAID.
