On February 1, Evenflo announced a voluntary recall/revision of its Discovery infant car seats, Models 390, 391, 534, and 552. Recent laboratory tests conducted by Evenflo and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed that the seats could become detached from their bases in high impact side collisions.Although the seat meets or exceeds all government standards, and has proven to be relatively effective in protecting children during side impacts, the detachment is potentially dangerous. To remedy the safety defect, Evenflo is providing owners of the seat with a free supplemental dual-hook fastener that, in tests, remedied the detachment problem.
Evenflo is also working to make its new models of car seats safer in side impacts, and those models should be available by the second quarter of 2008.In the meantime, you can check the recall for information on how to obtain the supplemental dual-hook fastener.
In a related story, the NHTSA has issued Ease-of-Use ratings for car seats. These ratings tell consumers how easy the seats are to use based on their instructions, labels, car installation procedure and child securing procedure.
