They just don’t make ’em like they used to. This is the fourth ATV recall we have posted about this month, each from different manufacturers.
This time Honda has recalled about 24,000 of their TRX 400EX Four-Wheelers because of a transmission problem that could allow the rider to downshift from 1st gear into reverse without using the reverse lockout lever.
Although no injuries have been reported, all Honda Model ’05 and ’06 TRX400EX ATVs are to be returned to the place of purchase for service. Consumers are advised to stop riding these ATV Fourwheelers immediately.
For more information, call Honda at 866-784-1870 or visit the Honda Power Sports website at www.powersports.honda.com .
US Recall News will try to keep you updated on other Four Wheeler (ATV) Recalls in the future, but our advice is to buy a used one. The models from this past year just don’t seem to be working out.

I phurchased a 2005 450r .It has been back to dealer do to engine failer 6 mons after I bought it. 6mons. later same thing only more internal and external damage. honda warr.won’t fix, dealer [Riders world says atv well maintained. warr.rep won’t speake to us and honda warr. co.investigate reps. so called [Hydro-lock]No evidence to support this. While out @ a atv trail in gilbert ther was arecall for a 15.00 part to fix this .Funny thing the first time my motor quite a week later another bike [same model} same problem. Honda gave the dealer a hard time about paying for repairs. It is now sitting on the Pa.Att. Gens. offce desk.Another burocratic mud hole.

The past fall of 2006 I bought two new Rincon 07 models with the fuel injection only to hope I improved my machines. I took back the first one because of a knock in the engine after it warmed up. It sounds like a old sewing machine when it idles. Well after what is going on two months of sitting in the shop, 2 camshafts, an oil pump chain, a timing chain tensioner, it still knocks! The other one I still have at home also knocks after it warms up and if it is 80 degrees outside it is even worse as I live in the north country and right now it is December. Now they say it will be another month before a factory rep will be able to look at it and that I should drive it. I asked them what kind of engine damage will be delayed because of this engine knock later on down the road. What kind of company would tell you to do that because it is a “normal” knock. I asked them what kind of an engine know “is normal”? I am getting no product support for this new 680 cc fuel injected engine whatsoever. Anyone out there know what I can do to get these people to listen and take care of a product that was not tested before it was put on the retail floor? I hope enough of you read this and don’t buy the Rincon or even a honda for that matter. I know I won’t!

I have a 08 that does the same thing it’s got 3,586 miles on it now and keeps going. But it should not do that. I’ll never buy a Honda again I also have a Brute Force 750 V-Twin fuel injected has all kinds of power and has been an excellent machine no engine noises whatsoever

I will never own another honda. I bought a Rubicon trx 500. I had about a year and very low mileage. I kept up th maintenance and I noticed a pinging noise so I took it back in. I was told no big deal. I had about 1,000 or so very low miles, and 2 trips later I went out to start her up and nothing. I have now invested in a starter a battery acylenoid and am being told its in the engine. I dont have hard miles on this, it was takin care of, so I have had it in and out of shop, more in then out, new oil filter, pump, now timing, and transmission is slipping. what a nightmare, machine made it long enough for warrenty to expire.

I live in Minnesota where it gets cold. I bought a 2004 Rubicon 4 wheeler 4 fishin hunting, fun stuff…I dont even have it paid for. It has lasted me about 2 years maybe I barely have over 1000 miles. In 2006 I noticed a low ping, I had already had it in for check up, but took it back, they told me the cold weather u would get some noise, but it wasnt cold weather yet, they said not to worry, they had checked it out and tuned it up. well about 3 trips later, she wouldnt start, now so far I have spent over 2,000.00 on nothings. Battery, starte, cylenoid, into motor, oil filter, pump, no sooner got her out and tranny went, well now its the timming, what a night mare, and it all started shortly after warrenty and check ups expired. they dont make em like they used to…What is a reliable ride?? Its not a HONDA

I bought a new 2007 Honda Rincon…I never took it off the lot. I test drove it for 5-10 minutes and it must have quit 15x. I started it (over and over), let it warm up, it ran worse than ever. The knocks were so hard it shook the whole vehicle. It wouldn’t idle and when you put it in gear, it died.
Needless to say, I’m cancelling my order.

I have a 2006 Honda TRX 400EX with a known reverse recall. First occasion approximantly 7 month after purchase trans jumps into reverse while in forward motion. Does $1400.00 worth of damage and dealer says recall doesn’t include serial number for my four wheeler. Would not put me in touch with rep. Sucks but paid bill and life goes on. Second occasion 1year 3months later, riding along on trail, quad goes into reverse again. Dealer still says recall doesn’t pertain to my quad but trans issues tell me different. HELP!!! If anyone knows how to get in touch with a regional rep or someone that will listen, please let me know.

I bought a new 07 Rincon, after 25 hrs on the bike the headgasket blew. I took it into the dealer and they replaced the headgasket, now the bike starts very hard, stalls alot, and has alot of engine noise. I took the bike to another mechanic, he said it is definately not normal, and the sound is mechanical. The dealer told me just to put alot of miles on it. Now I have a bike that I dont want to drive for fear of being stranded, and the warranty just run out. Any advice as to what this could be, I am probably going to have to pay for this out of my own pocket.

I have a 2004 Honda Rancher 350 ES (automatic trans). First problem appeared as when I was in fourth gear, the display flashed 4 (indicating 4th gear) and would not up shift or down ship. I could stop the vehicle and “rock” it down each gear to Neutral and start over. One morning, I started the quad (in neutral) and it would not go into gear. I live in the Baja and a mexican guy came out, took it to “his shop” said he reset the sensor, returned it and said it was okay now. Asked what the problem was, he said I needed to replace the battery. He said that it takes a lot of power for the machine to shift. Didn’t make sense to me as the quad starts right up and lights work at good light level and no other problem. He said the battery was not charging when vehicle was running…again, I don’t think that is the pro blem since it starts right up and the lights are good. The quad is now doing the same thing in 5th gear, display show the 5, the 5 (indicatging gear) flashes and it won’t downshift. I live in the Baja and don’t want to tow this to the US and listen to dealership BS….does anyone have a clue waht might be wrong, or what might need to be replaced? I just can’t believe that it is a bad battery, or that the battery is not charging when running since it always starts right up and the lights are bright and stay that way. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
charles labranche says
I dont believe there should be a recall,of these reports above, the complaints are towards different machines, meaning that its the unexpereinced riders that ruined these machines………..HONDA kicks a…………………………………………….
charles labranche says
Patricia, wake up,what do you think ES stands for?just a hint (electronic shift)

In June 2006, I bought a brand new Honda TRX 500 Canadian Trail Edition 4 wheeler. I’ts been a terd since new. When I first started the break in procedure i noticed that it was overheating. I fixed the problem by adding 1/2 L of coolanat. The bike seemed to work fine after that, but I had a strong antifreeze smell when the machine was at operating temperature. A close inspection of the cooling system showed a single drop of coolant hanging from the water pump. The dealer however cant seem to find the problem. The first winter I owned proved to be another terd. It was almost impossible to start and would require 20-30 minutes of warm-up with my thumb on the throttle or else it would stall. Meanwhile, the ritch fumes from the exhaust would make me nautious. I’ve had to replace the battery twice because it keeps boiling dry, however the charging system is working fine. All of these problems exist today and cannot be fixed. The dealer says nothing is wrong. In short, do not buy a Honda or you will regret it!

I have a rincon 680 2008 model. I have until the 27th of feb. to get warranty work done on it. I have taken it to one dealer 2 times and 1 other dealer once. When I try to put it in reverse it grinds they told me it was because I wasn’t making a direct shift. If you put it in forward and then pull it into reverse it will go in without grinding , but if you just pull it out of neutral into reverse it is going to grind I dont care how hard you pull it. I am sick of dealing with Honda and I never thought I would say it. It is like they dont care about the customers who keep them in business.

my 09 Rincon was doing the same thing, all I had to do is lift the right side of the fuel tank and adjust the shift cable.

I have a 2008 680 Rincon and it too is starting to grind recently when putting it in reverse. Bloody noisey if you dont put it in nutrel right away. Anyone else having this problem? I hope I will have a gear lift…….

I’ve got a 2005 650 Honda Rincon. The transmission has been slipping for years. It is slowly getting worse. It slips when cold and after warming up works fine with the exeption of kicking in and out of gear when moving slow. I now have about 1500 miles on it and have done nothing more then change the oil twice. I’ve used it on my property to pull trees down and have probably overworked it. I’ve rolled it twice. My wife loves it and I would like to hear the possible fix for for the trani.
Rich says
well, i have 3 honda 4-wheelers, an 03 rancher (350), and an older foreman(450) and a 680 rincon. The 350, and 450 will outdo the rincon easy! The grinding in reverse, yep got it! The over heating light ,yep got it too! the govenor trying to get out of mud in reverse, yep! the feeling of relief when i get this junk paid off (680) priceless! And no “new” hondas for me anymore!!!
tom barnett says
yes it does seem that honda does not care anymore i have a 2003 honda rincon 650 about 4500 mi and had to replace the timing chain. front bearing s eem to be an issue also but my daugther wrecked it right after i bought it . so i cannot directly blame honda for the bearing isssues. honda motors used to be rock solid what happened.

I own a 2004 500 rubicon with the transmission slipping pretty much from new. When accelerator is applied and before speed is gained is where it really shows up more so, on the d1 and d2. Quad has under 500 gently run miles. Know of another rubicon with slippage as well. Totally agree there should be a recall after reading so many similar problems.
george says
well i bought an 08 rincon off of the showroom floor and have had nothing but problems with it. It over heats, every now and then the tranny stops working and it will not go forward, and now i have a clicking when i turn my key on that clicks in unison with the FI light on the dash. the clicking stops when a brake is applied but it will not run. any ideas??? Thank GOD I’m not still Wild and Young, or my 03″ Rubicon would be HISTORY!! I’m almost 40 yrs old, so I cant take those ATV wreck , like I used too! Although, I love my Honda Rubicon, since day 1, this thing has had transmission slippage!! I cannot use the ES feature as the transmission absolutely sounds like it is going to tear apart, so I have been FORCED in riding this bike like a POLARIS!! I just keep it in Automatic at D1 and let the tranny do the rest! I ride this bike VERY EASY, so I will not have transmission failure, but I know one day it will finally go completely out!! What a shame this is!! I worked hard after my (DAILY JOB) everyday at another skill I do to earn extra income, so I could pay cash for this ATV. I now have a LEMON, and it is an 03″ with less than 2000 original miles. SHAME ON YOU HONDA–DAMN RIGHT YALL SHOULD RECALL THIS PROBLEM—PS. You lost a customer
Mike (Honda Tech.) says
To all with 680 rincons complaining about noisy shifts into reverse, have the shift cable adjusted before the sub transmission is destroyed.I have done three in the past two months,800.00 dollar repair for a 20 minute adjustment!!!!!

Allen Wiese says
For the record, I’m in my 50’s, I take care of my belongings and “OVER” maintain my power equipment. I change the oil and filters well before the scheduled intervals. I keep them cleaned and lubricated. I bought a brand new 07 camo Rincon off the show room floor in approx. May 08 from my local Honda “STEALERSHIP”. I also purchased the extended warranty, which I now see was a waste of my hard earned money. I had previously purchased a brand new yellow Rancher 420ES 4×4 from the same “STEALERSHIP” a year earlier. The Rincon’s handlebars and front end alignment were out of spec from day 1. The camo started peeling before it had 20 hours on it. No, I didn’t power wash it. I took it back to the selling “STEALERSHIP” for it’s 20 hours service. I asked that the alignment and handle bars be set to specs, that the peeling camo be addressed and the mandatory 20 hour service be performed. The “JERKS” never touched the valve cover bolts, so no valve adjustments were done, but they sure as hell charged me for it. CROOKS!!! They said the the steering and handle bar issues were due to improper tire pressure, which was pure bull. I don’t believe the young rookie mechanic that worked on it knew his butt from a hole in the ground. He was totally unprofessional in his attitude and appearance. The manager said they took photos of the peeling camo and would contact me after the “Big Dogs” at Honda had reviewed them. I’m still waiting for them to contact me! Goes to show just how Fabulous their customer service is. I bought a brand new camo 08 Rancher 420ES 4×4 from an out of town Honda Powerhouse dealer in approx. May 09, because my local Honda “STEALERSHIP” will never get another red cent of my money. In approx. July or August of 09, when the 08 Rancher’s 20 hour service was due, I took it and the Rincon to the powerhouse dealer. Regarding the Rincon, they did fix the alignment and handle bar issues, but charged me $35.00 to do so. That’s very reasonable, but it should have been covered by the “EXPENSIVE” extended warranty I had purchased. In reality, this should have been repaired by the selling “STEALERSHIP” at the 20 hour service time at no charge. The powerhouse dealer did do all the scheduled service on both machines to satisfaction, including the valve adjustments. They told me that they would be sending photos of the continually peeling camo on the Rincon to Honda and would contact me. Sound familiar? Again, I am still waiting. My opinion of the Rincon is very low. It’s way under powered, comes equipped with worthless stock tires, has no low range with its 3 speed transmission, gets hot quickly, engine dies at the worst possible times and the shocks are lousy, way too soft and they have no pre-load adjustments. Honda’s camo is a rip off at an additional $350.00 cost option. In my opinion, the “RINCON” is the “SIDEWALK SISSY” of utility ATV’s. Don’t waste your money on one! Also, don’t get conned into purchasing the extended warranty on any Honda power sport item. The dealers I have dealt with always find some reason not to honor it. The FOLKS at HONDA and their dealers had best get their act together. The name “HONDA” no longer stands for “Quality, Dependability and Value”, as it once did. In these tough economic times, more and more consumers are educating themselves before they lay down their hard earned money to purchase non-essential items, especially those used for entertainment or recreational use. As far as I am concerned, I will never purchase another Honda ATV, PERIOD!!!

well so far I have had 4 honda’s,1993 300(great bike) that’s the one that sold me on honda. I had an 03 rincon , the fly wheel came loose and chewed up the staterplate. I called honda about the problem, the bike was even out of warrantty. Honda went good for it. but a dealer did not. I no longer have that one , now I have a 05rincon with the over heating problems and no other problems…………………….. my 07 rincon has had 1 problem caused by shitty fuel . cleaned out the screan on the injector pump and runs great they all did and I pretty much put them throw the test not 1 tranny problem great brake life on all 3 rincons. I do most of my own repairs, so buy the correct oils, do your own work and start riding harder 93/300 23000-25000 miles 03 rincon 3800 traded in 05 has 3600mi 07 has 3200mi ya what a differance in technolgy pretty sad

I have an ’05 Rincon with over 1000 (rough) miles – has worked great except for the occasional grinind in the back breaks…they say that is “normal” for a Rincon. My problem now is that it is overheating and the waterpump weep hole is leaking. The radiator is full, so I am guessing the water pump is not pumping fluid through the engine and is leading to overheating. Any comments?

I HAVE AN 04 HONDA RUBICON 4X4 BOUGHT NEW,WOULD NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER NEW HONDA ATV,FIRST SHORT RIDE OUT IT WAS LEAKING OIL OUT OF THE DRAIN PLUG SLIGHTLY BUT I CAUGHT IT IN TIME,SHIFTING ANGLE SENSOR REPLACED,AND NOW A CHIRPING SOUND OUT OF THE TOP OF THE ENGINE, JUST A LITTLE OVER MY FIRST SCHEDULED OIL CHANGE, THESE NEWER ELECTRIC MACHINES HAVE A LOT TO BE DESIRED, COMPARED TO OLD SCHOOL HONDA ATVS SUCH AS THE 300 TRX.I THINK HONDA THINKS HONDA MADE A BIG MISTAKE MAKING THE OLD ONES TO DURABLE . LIKE THEY DID ,SO MAYBE THERE STRATEGY IS TO MAKE SOMETHING THAT REQUIRES CONSTANT SERVICE AND REPAIR,EVERYBODY I KNOW THAT OWNS A HONDA ES MACHINE IS OVER THIS B.S. PRODUCT HONDA IS PRODUCING WITH ALL THE FAULTY SENSORS(ALL MODELS ! ) THAT THEY HAD MADE IN MEXICO FOR A CHEAP CONTRACT PRICE,THIS IS WHAT I’VE BEEN TOLD BY A PRETTY GOOD SOURCE ! ALSO MY NEIGHBOR CAME OVER THE OTHER DAY AND EXPLAINED TO ME THAT HIS 05 RECON ES SPIT OUT THE AUXILIARY SHIFT SHAFT (NEVER USED) AND BEFORE HE COULD SHUT IT OFF IT WAS OUT OF OIL ,AND HE HAD TO WALK BACK TO HIS TRUCK ALMOST 3 MILES OUT OF HIS HUNTING LEASE,FIRST I’VE HEARD THAT ONE, AND OF COARSE HONDA COULDN’T FIGURE THAT ONE OUT ,AND HAD TO CHARGE HIM FOR REPAIRS,TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY HONDA DOES A PISS POOR JOB, COVERING ALL THERE WARRANTIES OR ADMITTING THERE FAULTS IN ELECTRICAL PARTS,NEVER SEEMS TO BE THEIR FAULT.HELL THE DEALERSHIP IN MY TOWN CAN’T EVEN FIX THINGS RIGHT EVEN IF IT’S NOT COVERED,THEY REBUILT A RECON TOP END ON A MANS BIKE 2 TIMES BEFORE SOMEBODY TOLD THEM THE OIL PUMP WAS OUT ,BUT AFTER SOME THREATENING FROM THERE LAWYER, AND EXPECTING TO GET PAID THE 3 RD TIME THEY FINALLY HAD ANOTHER TECH THAT WAS QUALIFIED ENOUGH TO DO IT AND MAKE IT RIGHT, HONDA SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THERE MACHINES AND FAULTS TO IT’S CUSTOMERS,AND BY NOT STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE , AND SHOULD COVER MOST LIGAMENT FAULTY ISSUES.BUT,NOT ALL PROBLEMS BY SELF INFLICTED ABUSE, BUT THAT WOULD PROBABLY PUT THEM OUT OF BUSINESS,THERE ‘S SO MUCH,THEY SHOULD HAVE DESIGNED BETTER BRAKES (DISC) BEFORE MIXING FANCY ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS/ SENSORS WITH A MACHINE THAT IS INTENDED TO BE IN AND AROUND WATER/MUD AT LEAST FIELD TESTED BY REAL USE SITUATIONS AND NOT TESTED IN A PARKING LOT OR A FIELD,WHAT HONDA NEEDS TO DO IS PUT OUT A RECALL ON ALL THESE BIKES WITH FAULTY SENSORS AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEMS AND STEP UP THE PLATE AND QUIT HITTING THERE LOYAL CUSTOMERS POCKETS,AND RE- ESTABLISH A RENEWED CONFIDENCE/RELATIONSHIP WITH IT’S CUSTOMERS BEFORE THEY LOOSE THEM ALL, I HAVE BEEN RIDING HONDA’S SINCE 1972 AND WOULD NOT RECOMMEND BUYING A NEW ONE TO ANYBODY,LOOK FOR A GOOD OLDER LATE 80’S- TO LATE 90’S MODEL AND KEEP IT !, PARTS ARE CHEAPER AND A LOT EASIER TO WORK ON, AND THEY NEVER LEAVE YOU STRANDED !

my family owns a 04 rancher AT, 06 rubicon and I own a 04 rincon, for the rincon being the biggest and most expensive I would say its the most problems, I live in ND and when its cold out I have to drive in manual mode for athe first bit and keep it in 1st gear otherwise it slips instantly when shifted into 2nd, and is very jerky when trying to back it into its spot into the garage, try and be easy with the gas for that last little bit and then BAM it jumps into gear. from my experience that little rancher AT will outdo the big guy any day whether it be general driving or out playing, the cheap little rancher will make the big guy look stupid in mud and snow, I will never own another rincon, hopefully i can fix tranny problem so I can sell it to some unsuspecting doop. I have ridden hondas since before i had a bicycle, adn still have my first trail 70 along with other 70’s, dirtbikes, big reds, and nighthawks and f4i’s have all been in my garage and this rincon doesnt even deserve the honda logo

1500 hard maintained miles on it, its a utter pos compared to all the other hondas i have owned or own currently-2001 rubicon-3500 miles no problems that i didnt cause, 2004 rancher 400-1800 miles same thing-my kid who weighs as much as me can pull away out in the open compared to this garbage-but i do like how its light and sporty feeling compared to other 4 x 4 machines i have rode and owned, wiring is a nightmare-not well protected from intrusion, plastic is total garbage too-thank god for cable ties !! I have a 08 honda 680 rincon,That doesn’t won’t to pull or hardly go for that matter the first ten minutes its running.I recently take a ride with family around the block,we haven’t drove this thing wild or wide open since i got it ,,,,,During the ride i gas it to blow it out a little ,it starts busting up,Then running 35mph in Drive (automatic trans) the four wheeler suddenly comes to a stop ,i never took me thumb off the gas until that,no brakes was mashed,it was like it shift from 3rd to 1st there was no skip marks on the dirtfrom the brakes catching…..But from 35mph to 5mph in a second busted my 3 year old son face on bars..NOT COOL>>>>>>>>this is crazy,,,,I will never own another honda,It has about 500 miles on the atv we just bought it in november ,we may have put 100 miles on this atv….Yes i realize now i should have bought something new not used but the honda place where i bought it said it was kept up daily and that they new the older guy the traded it in ..said it was to much 4wheeler for him..I GOT SCREWED.

I have bought my last honda.am going to yamaha griz.before anyone speaks up and says I am just pi–ed off, this is my 7th honda 3 or 4 wheeler, starting with big reds for my kids.I also have 2 honda 70’s,one 1150, one used 750, one big 1800 sport cruiser, which also had significant problems. one 1300. My 03 rincon has slipped from day one, my dealer kept getting me to try different things, nothing fixed it, the warranty is out, and I am sure i will never own another honda,my 1800 wasnt running correctly and they did nothing to make it right, honda just isnt the same, as i said, go to yamaha. alan e nelson

I have been a honda man since 1975. I recently purchased the Honda Rincon 680 from Geoff Bodine Honda of Melbourne Fl, home of the warranty for life. I spent $11,000 with upgrades. One which was a camo finish approximately $1,000. Salesman told me not to pressure wash it, which I did not. bike has been garage kept, at 50 hours I noticed camo bubbling up and peeling off. returned it to the dealer was told camo is a decal and not covered under warranty and would pull some strings and get one section replaced. Which they did. Immediately afterwards the rest of the camo started to peel. Got back to them and they told me i used my one time favor and there was nothing else they could do, they suggested I contacted Honda, which i did the person i talked with was very UNsympathetic and said my one year warranty was over with, and that (It is just a 4Wheeler) I could try all i wanted but this is a dead end. So I did some research, found out these bikes have been peeling for the last 3 or 4 years. Meaning Honda had previous knowledge of this condition when they sold it to me. The bike looks 6 years old. Will be hard to sell in this condition. I asked for new plastic, with no camo. He said it is NOT going to happen. I know why it would cost a fortune to replace 25,000 plastic camo pieces. Look it up!

I have owned a Honda 680 Rincon 7.5 years. It has been a great machine till now. When it is -20 C or more it will not start. I had it back and forth to Honda and they kept telling me it was the spark plug. That I was not letting it warm up long enough. I told them that it was the first time in nearly 8 years that it did this. After my 4th trip back, they had to call Honda for assistance. They told the mechanics that it was more than likely the temp. sensor and to just put a little heat on it on really cold days. I will be replacing it in the near future. I hope this information helps some Rincon owners. The part only costs 24.95C

I bought one of the first rincons around here , got it home and rode it around the yard a few times and it was making all kinds of knocking and top end rattling noises ,so I called the dealership and they said they would pick it up for service the next day . In the meantime , I called my lawyer and told him that I thought I had just bought a lemon . He told me to let them take it and never answer the phone calls from them ever again and he would handle it . I ignored the turds completely and he worked some magic , I never got any bad credit reports or anything from the fiasco and they got their quad stuck up their azz
