FDA Blames Failure to Inspect Chinese Drug Makers on Shortage of Funds

After recent debacles like the Digitek recall this week, and the heparin recall last month, it is obvious that a major overhaul is needed in the way we inspect, approve of and import drugs from overseas pharmaceutical companies. It seems that perhaps, finally, the US government is starting to take this threat seriously. Joe Sheffer reports on the American Pharmacists Association website that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is asking for hundreds of millions per year to inspect foreign drug facilities.
Scotts Miracle Gro Bypasses EPA Rules and Scotts Blames Ex-Employee

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ordered Scotts Miracle-Gro to stop selling and distributing two pesticide products that have not been registered with the EPA. The recalled pesticides are “Garden Weed Preventer + Plant Food” and “SLS Fertilizer With .28 Halts” and are sold at various home and garden stores across the country.

The decision to conduct a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) examination, two commonly performed diagnostic tests, often is very simple. The patient goes to the doctor with complaints of internal problems that may escape detection with traditional x-ray machines, so an MRI or MRA scan is ordered. Until now, the contraindications for having an MRI or MRA have been very limited: patients with cardiac pacemakers, insulin pumps, cochlear implants or other electronically, mechanically or magnetically activated implanted devices, should not have MRI or MRA scans or must proceed very cautiously.

Exubera and Lung Cancer

Pfizer, Inc. today sent letters to patients who may be taking Exubera, and to medical professionals who may be prescribing the drug to inform them of a possible link between Exubera use and lung cancer.
Exubera is a short-acting insulin that is administered through an inhaler. It helps diabetic adults control high blood sugar and is used for Type I and Type II diabetes.
Kansas Firm Recalls Cattle Heads

Elkhorn Valley Packing LLC, a Harper, Kan., establishment, is voluntarily recalling approximately 406,000 pounds of frozen cattle heads with tonsils not completely removed, which is not compliant with regulations that require the removal of tonsils from cattle of all ages, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.

Chantix - Varenicline and Suicidal Thoughts

The FDA today announced ongoing safety reviews of the drug varenicline, marketed as Chantix and designed to help smokers quit smoking. You may remember the drug’s commercials with the rabbit and the turtle / tortoise in a race.
The early communication by the FDA about this ongoing safety review has to do with the possibility of increased suicidal and aggressive thoughts while taking Chantix.
