2010 ALTIMA 4CYL TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO DRAG. MILAGE IS ONLY 23 ON OPEN OR LOCAL TRAVEL. RELEASE GAS PEDAL AND FELLS DRAGING WHILE COASTING.

I have the same problem with my car. The transmission does not allow the car to coast…it holds it back even on level ground.

I have the 2010 Altima SL also. The experience you are feeling is typical for the “Nissan’s” CVT transmissions. I don’t recommend doing this often but, if you are coasting on a straight away or down a hill, place the shifter into neutral and you will feel your “dragging” disappear. This dragging is not a discrepancy, just something you will have to get used to. The tranny at times will seem to lurch forward also during low speed braking especially down a slight grade roadway. You can place the shifter into sport mode and up shift to 6th gear to rid this dragging feeling and prevent lurching.
The reason you are getting low gas mileage is because of “Quick Starts”. Go slowly to where you almost feel the tranny groining but not to that point. It will take some getting used to. Remember, you have a electronic gas pedal. The Engine Computer governs fuel flow. I am averaging about 32-34 MPG combo and still drive about 62-65 MPH at max it will take me about 30 seconds to get up to the speed. Driving your car 55-60 and allowing steady to slight pulsing throttle will give you the best mileage.
Groining noise from tranny is a sign of slippage, so don’t allow the noise to occur, it is a reference only starting point. This is the area, CVT tranny’s fail. Most tranny’s downshift not allowing this groining noise to take place. Notice you can’t feel the shifting? You have to look at your RPM gauge. Another way to insure your driving somewhat OK, is when accelerating, keep the RPM’s between 2K and 3K and don’t exceed 4K (until your break-in period). Try it out and post your findings.
OH, one more thing, your 4cyl engine QR25DE is a 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve has 175 hp @ 5,600 rpm and 180 lb-ft of torque @ 3,900 rpm; So, in low gear (3rd and higher) your engine will pull the car in very slow speeds causing that groining noise, this is why the CVT will burn up. Don’t accelerating in a low gear, shift to a higher gear (2nd and lower). If you accelerate fast, the Computer will downshift the tranny with no problem, but the RPM will drive above the 4K mark, this is not a problem when your break-in period is complete.
Do not use Fram or standard Purolator oil filters. Use Napa Gold, Wix, K&N, or CARQUEST Blue (premium) filters. All others have a paper media that can’t hold up to the 7500 mile oil change. Even the oil filter from Nissan is garbage, it is just like the fram series. YouTube it and check it out for yourself. I cut my Nissan Filter apart after 50 miles and NO it did not fail, it was fine. Just the filter was constructed of all paper and it did not have the synthetic media it needs to make the extended oil changes. Use only Fully Synthetic oil and not the Blend type. You will know if you have other than fully Synthetic oil in your engine, you may experience engine noise such as clattering and high pitch pinging.
    Good Luck

I bought a pre-owned 2010 Altima a few months ago after owning an Altima for 12 years. Dennis and Ed, I too am experiencing the same dragging when coasting. It feels like the transmission is downshifting when coasting or the breaks are holding the car back and I’ve also experienced that groaning noise when driving down a steep hill. The nose was so loud I had to pull off the road. I thought there was something wrong with the engine or the transmission. I don’t do much highway driving therefore I experience this dragging often. I also notice the RPM gauge fluctuating between 1 & 2K even when idling. Is this something I should be concerned about or just something I need to get use to?

    Nancy,
What was your RPM when you heard this noise.
If it was in the 6K then there is your answer. You are hearing the engine breaking.
This noise is normal. Make sure your driving the car in the “D” and not in the “+” “-” position.
The RPM in Idle should be around 700 or so. But, the RPM should be steady.
If your RPM is fluctuating, then you may need service.
IF, the noise going down the hill is still heard then Shift to “N” and see if that stops.
OR you can move the shifter over to your left in the +- band and move the shifter forward several times till you see the number 6 on your display. The noise should disappear.
IF the noise is still there, then you have the famous Nissan Altima CVT tranny noise that requires a visit to the dealer.

I have just recently purchased used 2010 Altima 2.5. The car car is mainly used for highway travel. The car was a one owner with 32000 miles and was purchased from a dealer used car lot. Both,my wife and I love the car but I am starting to notice what may be querks in the transmission. When starting from a stop it feels as if the transmission “slips” and when it shfts to higher gear range it seems like it labors to get up to speed-35-40. This happens only once in a while and also when slowing down and then resumeing speed it “chatters” like it will not stay in higher gear like it can’t make up its mind which gear to use. Also another quirk that i’ve noticed is that when on the highway going the speed limit-65-70, and when going up hill,if i have to slow down due to slower traffic, the car has a hard time regaing speed as if it stayed in overdrive and didn’t downshift. The car drives very normally and there are no noticeable grunts and groans. Its just that these quirks happen once and a while. Are these signs of transmission failure? The car has 35000 miles now, so it is still covered by factory warranty. One last thing, the car does not have the feeling of dragging,it rolls very easy when slowing down, there is a slight feel of engine braking when lifting off of the gas.
Thank you for your time in this matter……..

Bill, you need to check the transmission fluid level. The stick is locked in the stowage position and you will need to press tab to release the stick. Twist the stick around as if not to relock the dip stick when placing it down when checking level. The fluid should be hot with the engine idling and on level ground. Fluid should should be in the hashed band. Fluid should not have a burnt smell nor be brown (varnished) in color. If the fluid is clean and the level is good even after cycling the gear selector through the gears prior to checking level and the fluid is hot, then you need ask the dealership who you bought the car from if they had replaced the transmission fluid. If the dealership is not a NISSAN dealer, than chances are they replaced the fluid with the wrong type. Fluid type is specific. Only NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-2 can be used. If the fluid was replaced and they did not use NS-2, than you need to have the tranny power flushed fluid change. If the fluid was not replaced and the fluid is clean then you need to take the vehicle to the dealer for possible warranty service. The tranny not downshifting could be your not pressing the pedal down far enough or you may be in sport mode (shifter on the left side). For the tranny to shift on demand, the shifter needs to be on the right side.
Let me know your findings. Good Luck

Service bullentin regarding drive belt noise.
Another one for exhaust shield rattle.
No recalls for engine or tranny. Nissan has a special warr for both eng and tranny.
So, worn cam followers has caused your tranny shifting issues?

Symptom – Dragging when letting off gas, not coasting. Our 2010 2.5SL had same problem. There is a computer control that regulates this. Complained to dealer and they made setting change during an oil change. Dealer did not charge for making the adjustment since our complaint was high RPMs when going down slight grades and letting off gas. Car rolls like in neutral now except when going down steeper grades. Still have very high RPMs on steeper grades. Dealer said brakes will wear faster was only down side of computer adjustment. Also said their is a 0 to 5 or 1 to 5 setting for the “coasting control”. Ours is now OFFf but may ask for a medium setting since there is no slowing when letting off the gas on level grade. As stated, it’s like neutral and must brake more frequent.

Regarding my comment on Jan 28 for my 2010 Altima 2.5. Took car to dealer to have checked out. Everything was normal and nothing was found. May be just not used to driving with this type transmission and have to just relearn how to drive with this type. Thank you for your reply——Bill

2010 Nissan, windows are getting coated with a film when the heat or air is on. Smell coming from the vents smell like engine coolant. Dealer never checked this when it was in for it’s last oil change. Good thing it’s a lease, can’t wait to get rid of it.

    Mr. McMorris and Mr. Smith,
The dragging you are feeling is the tranny. This is normal. If you put the teanny in “N” this dragging will stop. There is a fix, it can only be done by someone who has the Consult-III scanner and the software. This is mostly available at the dealership. They will reprogram the transmission shift patterns to address your comfort level. This may effect your MPG economy, just so you know.
Good luck and remember, there is nothing wrong with the tranny, this is normal.

This is normal CVT engine braking. It uses then engine to maintain the vehicles speed going down a hill, like downshifting one gear in a regular automatic. It will ultimatly save the brakes, because you dont have to ride the brakes down a hill, the engine does the braking for you. This is completely normal for the CVT to do this, and is in fact, an advantage.

I own a 2010 Nissan Altima (4cyl)- for over a year now. Last week a noticed a loud noise from inside the cabin of the car sounding as if I’m driving a motorcycle! The car is shifting fine and I’m used to the CVT engine sounds… it sounds as if I have a hole in one of the hose, but I can’t see it! The noise doesn’t appear until after speeds of over 20mph. It almost sounds like a muffler issue but its at the front of the car.
