Giant Eagle Voluntarily Recalls Items Prepared with Romaine Lettuce Due to Potential E. coli Contamination

Giant Eagle, Inc. is recalling multiple items prepared with romaine lettuce and sold in its Giant Eagle, Market District and GetGo locations across western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana. This recall is in response to a CDC notice on romaine lettuce sourced by a supply partner from the Yuma, Arizona growing region.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a bacterium that causes a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.

Giant Eagle is conducting this voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution. There are no reported illnesses among Giant Eagle customers to date associated with this recall.

The ready to eat products were packaged from April 9th to April 13th and were sold in clear plastic containers. They include various items prepared with romaine lettuce and sold in our catering, restaurant and salad bar areas. The following products are also subject to recall, and include those items referenced in an associated USDA recall announcement regarding Giant Eagle’s Fresh Foods Manufacturing production facility located in Freedom, Pennsylvania:

Customers who have purchased the affected product should dispose of it or return it to their local Giant Eagle or Market District. Customers may also bring in the qualifying receipt to receive a refund on their purchase of the affected product.

In addition to this public communication regarding this recall, Giant Eagle initiated its consumer recall telephone notification process. The consumer recall process uses purchase data and consumer telephone numbers housed in the Giant Eagle Advantage Card database to alert those households that purchased the affected product and have updated telephone contact information in the database.
