Market of Choice is recalling bulk and packaged hazelnuts (filberts) that were processed at Willamette Shelling Inc. for Evonuk Oregon Hazelnuts. The nuts were recalled from seven Market of Choice stores in Oregon on December 17.
Willamette Shelling Inc. issued the initial recall because Salmonella was recently found in some of the product processed at its facility. To help ensure consumer safety, Evonuk Oregon Hazelnuts recalled all hazelnuts received from Willamette Shelling and further distributed to their customers, including the Market of Choice stores. No confirmed illnesses have been reported at this time.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
