Provide Commerce Recalls Items Containing Pistachio Nuts

June 21, 2009 By The FDA Leave a Comment

As a precautionary measure, Provide Commerce, Inc. of San Diego, CA has initiated a nationwide voluntary recall of certain items, including products distributed under Provide Commerce’s brand names of ProFlowers, Cherry Moon Farms, Secret Spoon, RedEnvelope and Shari’s Berries. The recalled items contain pistachios that may be part of the recall originally announced by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. on March 30, 2009 and expanded on April 6, 2009, due to possible contamination with Salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail and elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. For more information on Salmonella, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention web-site at https://www.cdc.gov.

Provide Commerce is recalling these products out of the abundance of caution. There have been no illnesses or injuries reported to date affiliated with these products. Anyone concerned about an illness or injury should contact a physician immediately. Provide Commerce has informed the Food and Drug Administration of its actions and is fully cooperating with the agency.

The recalled items were sold by ProFlowers, Cherry Moon Farms, Secret Spoon, RedEnvelope and Shari’s Berries online and by telephone throughout the United States beginning in October 2008 through March 2009. Pistachios subject to recall may be either shelled or unshelled, and packaged in either pistachio or mixed nut assortments included in the following gift basket products:
