Maytag Recalls Dishwashers Due to Fire Hazard

June 4, 2010 By The CPSC 34 Comments

Maytag is recalling 1.7 million dishwashers due to an electrical failure in the heating element that can cause fires.

The Maytag dishwasher recall is going into effect after dozens of reports involving fires possibly caused by heating element failures in Maytag dishwashers. Although no injuries have been reported, some cases include major fire damage to homes.

The recall includes Maytag®, Amana®, Crosley®, Jenn-Air®, Magic Chef ® and Performa by Maytag® brand dishwashers with plastic tubs and certain serial numbers listed below.

The recalled dishwashers were made with black, bisque, white, silver and stainless steel front panels with the brand name printed on the front of the unit.

Model and serious numbers can be found on a label inside the plastic tub near the left of the door opening. All serial numbers for the recalled dishwashers should start or end with one of the sequences below:

SERIAL NUMBER STARTING WITH OR SERIAL NUMBER ENDING WITH
NW39, NW40, NW41, NW42, NW43, NW44, NW45, NW46, NW47, NW48, NW49, NW50, NW51, NW52, NY01, NY02, NY03, NY04, NY05, NY06, NY07, NY08, NY09, NY10, NY11, NY12, NY13, NY14, NY15, NY16, NY17, NY18, NY19   JC, JE, JG, JJ, JL, JN, JP, JR, JT, JV, JX, LA, LC, LE, LG, LJ, LL, LN, LP, LR, LT, LV, LX, NA, NC, NE, NG, NJ, NL, NN, NP, NR

These Maytag dishwashers were sold at department stores, appliances stores and by home-builders nationally between February 2006 and April 2010. The price range was between $250 and $900. They were made in the USA.

What You Should Do if You Have a Recalled Maytag Dishwasher:
Consumers who own a recalled Maytag Dishwasher (or related brands listed above) should stop using the unit immediately and disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it. Also inform everyone in the household not to use the dishwasher. Contact Maytag (information supplied below) to verify that your dishwasher has been included in the recall. Once verified, you should either schedule a free in-home repair or receive a $150 rebate in some cases.

A statement released by the CPSC in conjunction with Maytag advises consumers NOT to return their recalled dishwasher to the retailer where the unit was purchased. Instead, you are advised to contact Maytag at (800) 544-5513 for more information.

I have called Maytag 3 times and gave them the info on my Quiet series 300. Model MDB TT 60AWQ1, serial number NY0219016. Other info on nameplate E71195–Type777-0. To be told that my model numer is not valid. The lady told me she would transfer me to someone else in the know. Guess what, I got disconnected and a dial tone. Called back and the sme thing happened. This time I was told I had already called several times. So much for Maytags concern. My dishwasher still needs their attention. Any ideas?

Christine Golditch – we have the same problem – burns in the lower and upper racks. Our latch is also broken. We have the Quiet Series 300 too but our model number is MDB7600AWS. We purchased it in summer 2004 when we had our house built. I am concerned about what to do too.

I purchased a Maytag dishwasher 1 yr ago. Of course what do you think happens one day after 1yr anniversery yes it wont work. It will fill with water but wont run. The motor is locked down. I have been going back and forth with a whirlpool washing machine that has had to be serviced 8 times in less than 2 yrs. I have come to the conclusion that what was once the top of the line brands are no longer!! I would like to know if anyone has had any issues with their dishwasher doing the same as mine?

We have a Maytag Dishwasher Model # MDB5600AWB, Serial # 2687988GA. We’ve had the dishwasher since 2005 and have had it serviced several times. We have the exact problems (overheating, broken door latch) as the recalled dishwashers and yet Maytag says it’s not a problem.

I’m to the point where I’ll submit a report to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Maybe if we all do that, we may force Maytag to take action.

I find it ridiculous that this company needs to “wait and see” what property damages we sustain by using their product, before they do anything to remedy the problem.

I also have the MDBTT60AWB, we purchased it a few years ago from Lowes, its not very quite for one, secondly we had to replace the latch now with in the last few days the control panel isn’t responding you push any buttons and it starts then goes to rinse no matter what u chose within a couple minutes. I bought all Fridgidaire appliances except the dishwasher, grrrrr!! Also the heating element gets like a hard flaky crust on it that smokes…

J.Y. – That is terrible! Beautiful house and great neighborhood location (Palo Alto).
What is the result? Was this recent? Did you rebuild?

I am pulling out my Maytag Quiet Series 100 today and replacing it with a Kenmore Elite. I never had any mechanical problems with the Maytag (my serial numbers aren’t on the list), but it wouldn’t wash my dishes. I would put the dishes in practically pre-washed and they would come out dirtier!

A neighbor’s Maytag dishwasher burned a hole at her floor. Hope the recall can be taken seriously. We rebuilt our house and it is a long and very stressful process. The fire happend three years ago, we just finished rebuilding.

I have a Maytag dishwasher with Model # MDD8000AWS0 and Serial # NW3919605. According to the table above, our dishwasher is included in the recall, but when I called Maytag I was told that it is not. Is there anyone else besides the company who would have to repair/replace it that I can verify with?

Is this one of your recalls, I moved into this house not to long ago, and the dishwasher went out shortly, I did notice it got really hot in the area, much hotter then my old dishwasher, It finally went out, and I guess I should be glad it did, with reading the others reviews..

I have Maytag Quiet Series 300 purchased jan 2006. It is not on the recall list, however this week the heating element got extremely hot during a wash cycle and there was a burning smell and now looks brown and burned. Are all the Maytag dishwashers faulty? Is Maytag compensating all units with this problem. I feel lucky I was home and could turn my washer off!

Just bought a house with this dishwasher .. twice a repair man came out and aside from his ridiculously bad attitude, we were told there was nothing wrong with the dishwasher .. that does not wash dishes but it gets very hot for a long time. Lucky we bought a new dishwasher. Not Maytag. Lucky we got it before our house burned down 🙁

Well, all appliances at home are Maytag. They came with the 7 years old house. I got this website looking for this specific dishwashers manual, because it’s been making a loud noise for 2 days. That means the fridge washer and dryer, stove, and the dishwasher were working very well without any problems at all for 7 years, with extensive use.
After reading the fire hazard I will replace the dishwasher, don’t want the risk, but I can not understand why people are talking so hard on this brand.
