A nationwide recall has been announced on Pre-filled Heparin Lock Flush Solution USP (5 mL in 12 mL syringes) with Lot #070926H. The Heparin IV flush syringes have been found to be contaminated with Serratia marcescens, a bacterium that is resulting in patient infections. This type of bacterial infection can cause severe, life threatening or life altering injuries and can even be fatal. If you or someone you know has a Heparin Lock Flush Solution syringe, stop using it immediately and contact a medical professional now.

So far, at least 20 hospital patients in the Chicago area have developed infections from this contaminated blood-thinning drug. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) investigators are working directly with the manufacturing company in North Carolina to accurately and thoroughly assess this mounting potential health crisis.
