Problematic Mesh Products
There have been reports of complications arising from the use of Davol C. R. Bard surgical mesh products. These include the following products:
- Composix Kugel Hernia Mesh Patch: This synthetic mesh is designed for use in hernia repair surgeries. This patch however was recalled by Bard as a result of reports of various complications arising from its use. Unfortunately, thousands of patients had already felt the impact of these complications by the time the product was recalled.
- Supramesh IP Composite Mesh Problems: This product is yet to be recalled from the market by either the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or Bard. This is despite the numerous complaints against it. Some of the many complications that patients have reported include the adhesion of the mesh to organs that are near the site of where it was implanted. This includes the rectum, liver, colon, bladder, spermatic cord and the bowel.
- Bard 3DMax Hernia Mesh Injuries: This hernia mesh’s construction features polypropylene. This material is designed to erode. This makes using this mesh in hernia surgery extremely dangerous. Patients are likely to develop complications such as infertility and spermatic cord injury. Some patients have had to undergo testicle amputation as a result of the complications arising from the use of this mesh.
- Bard Composix Kugel hernia mesh: This mesh patch is used to repair hernias in the abdomen and groin. It has been known to break and cause serious injuries that are often life-threatening. There have also been reported cases of the mesh rolling into a cigar shape and others of the mesh migrating to another part of the patient’s system.
Many patients have had to undergo surgery for the removal of the mesh products or correction of complications arising from their use. However, complete removal of fragments in the system is not always possible. Many patients suffer permanent discomfort or injuries resulting from the use of the mesh products.
Common complications suffered by patients include:
- Nerve damage
- Bowel obstruction
- Perforated bowels
- Perforated organs
- Rejection of mesh
- Adhesion to organs
- Infections
- Autoimmune reactions
