Eddie Bauer Soothe & Sway Play Yards
UNITS: About 71,000 in the United States
DISTRIBUTOR: Dorel Juvenile Group Inc., of Columbus, IN
HAZARD: The rocking bassinet attachment on these Eddie Bauer play yards can tilt when secured by straps (in non-rocking mode), which can cause the recalled play yard / bassinet to stay tilted without returning to a level sleeping surface. In this situation an infant can roll to the corner or side of the bassinet and become wedged into the corner or pressed against the side or bottom of the bassinet. This can cause suffocation or positional asphyxiation.
INCIDENTS/INJURIES: There have been at least 10 reports of infants rolling to one side, including 6 that had their faces pressed against the side or bottom of the bassinet. One infant was reported to have turned purple and was out of breath when discovered.
DESCRIPTION: The recall involves Eddie Bauer Soothe & Sway Portable Play Yards. These were sold in stores nationwide and in Canada. A mobile with 3 teddy bears was also sold with the play yard and it has a convertible bassinet and changing station feature.
Model numbers being recalled include 05046 and 05044 made before December 1st, 2008. These model numbers can be found on the sticker located on one of the support legs under the recalled play yard. Different models were sold in Canada (Canadians should check with their recall agencies to confirm model numbers). The Eddie Bauer Play Yards with Rocking Bassinets were sold for about $150 at Target, Sears, Burlington Coat Factory and several other stores online and with locations across the country from January 2008 until May 2009. They were made in China.
Consumers are advised to stop using the bassinets attached to these play yards immediately. They can contact Dorel Juvenile Group at (888) 233-4903 for a $40 voucher toward the purchase of a new Dorel product. A CPSC statement said it is safe to continue using the play yard without the bassinet attachment.
