If you take over-the-counter (OTC) products for heartburn or upset stomach, you may be putting yourself at risk for a serious bleeding event. OTC Antacids that Contain Aspirin
You are probably familiar with the type of product, used to treat sour stomach, upset stomach, and heartburn. It usually comes in the form of tablets that you drop into a glass of water. It gets all fizzy and dissolves and then you drink it. These products are often used to treat hangovers. Examples of aspirin-containing antacids include:
- Alka-Seltzer
- Bromo Seltzer

Aspirin Can Cause Bleeding
Aspirin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). NSAIDs, including aspirin and ibuprofen, are known to cause gastrointestinal bleeding. You can find antacids that do not contain aspirin.
Signs of Bleeding
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found reports of eight people who experienced bleeding events serious enough to require hospitalization. If you experience any of the following signs of gastrointestinal bleeding after taking an aspirin-containing antacid, seek immediate medical attention:
- Abdominal pain
- Black, dark or tarry stools
- Bloody stools
- Vomiting blood or what looks like coffee grounds
- Feeling faint
- Paleness
Increased Risk
You are at increased risk for a bleeding event from taking aspirin-containing antacids if any of the following apply to you:
- Drink three or more alcoholic drinks daily
- Take steroids
- History of ulcers
- Take blood thinners
- Take other NSAIDs
- Are 60 or older
