Advanced Medical Optics Inc. has recalled about 3 million units of its Complete MoisturePlus contact lens solution due to sterility problems that could lead to eye infections. This is second major recall of a contact lens solution this year.
The company is recalling 183,000 units of the Moisture Plus contact lens solution in the US, after three lots made in China and sold in Japan were found to have bacterial contamination.
Most of the recalled 2.9 million contact solution units were shipped to Japan. Advanced Medical says there were no reports of physical harm from the recalled U.S. lots at the time of their announcement yesterday.
This recall comes less than two months after their competitor, Bausch & Lomb, recalled their ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution amidst links to a serious inflammation of the cornea caused by a fungus, known as keratitis.
The ReNu with MoistureLoc product generated more than $100 million in yearly sales for Bausch & Lomb, Inc., and now they may face up to $1 billion in product liability lawsuits as a result of alleged keratitis cases.
Consumers who have purchased or are using the Complete MoisturePlus brand contact solution are advised to stop using the product immediately and contact the store or pharmacy for more information.
