WASHINGTON, D.C. – THE U.S. CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION (CPSC) IS ONCE AGAIN URGING ALL PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS TO IMMEDIATELY STOP USING CONVERTIBLE “CLOSE-SLEEPER/BEDSIDE SLEEPER” BASSINETS MANUFACTURED BY SIMPLICITY INC., OF READING, PA. CPSC HAS LEARNED OF TWO ADDITIONAL INFANT DEATHS SINCE THE AUGUST 2008 SAFETY ALERT AND RECALL ANNOUNCEMENTS THAT NOTIFIED CONSUMERS OF TWO INFANTS WHO HAD STRANGLED IN THEIR SIMPLICITY BASSINETS. TO DATE, CPSC IS AWARE OF FOUR INFANTS WHO HAVE DIED IN THE CLOSE-SLEEPER BASSINETS.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling about 200,000 Rainforest Portable Play Yards made by Simplicity, Inc. and SFCA, Inc. because of consumer complaints about one or more rails unexpectedly collapsing. This defect has caused injuries to several children through entrapment or fall hazards.

Warning: Infants Strangled to Death in Simplicity Bassinets

The CPSC is urging parents and caregivers to immediately stop using convertible “Close Sleeper and Bedside Sleeper” bassinets made by Simplicity, Inc., of Reading, PA after learning this month of the death of a five-month-old girl due to strangulation resulting from entrapment between the bassinet’s metal bars.
Third Graco Crib Recall In As Many Years

Today (Friday Sept. 21, 2007) the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of One-million Simplicity and Graco cribs after three children were trapped and suffocated in Simplicity or Graco cribs.
All three children died after falling into a gap in the crib created when the person putting the crib together had installed the drop-rail side of the crib upside-down.

In late December last year, we ran a press release announcing the recall of Simplicity Incorporated’s Graco Aspen Cribs for posing a risk of suffocation. The screws on the mattress support were coming loose, causing the crib’s mattress to fall. At the time of that report, there had been five reported injuries, although none of them serious. Well, that is if an injured baby can ever NOT be serious.
