Muscle Cramps and Spasms: Symptom or Side Effect?

Muscle cramps and spasms are often symptoms of conditions or diseases such as multiple sclerosis, but could also be side effects associated with certain medications. Below is a list of diseases and conditions associated with symptoms like muscle cramps and spasms, as well as a list of medications related to similar side effects. Muscle Cramps and Spasms Are Symptoms Of:
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an auto immune condition that damages the nerves over time as it progresses. MS can affect any and all parts of the body causing immobility, vision problems, and cognitive difficulty. Loss of muscle control, including muscle cramps, spasm, and muscle weakness are common in MS.

Kidney Disease: Muscle cramps and spasms can both be symptoms of high phosphate levels caused by kidney disease. The problem comes in when phosphorous and calcium and not in balance and can lead to bone damage. Other symptoms of kidney disease include dark urine, difficulty urinating, fluid retention and swelling, fatigue, and a metallic taste in the mouth.

Spider Bite: The venom of the black widow contains a neurotoxin. Symptoms of a black widow spider bite include pain at the site of the bite, severe muscle cramps and spasms, abdominal pain, weakness, tremors, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fainting, chest pains, difficulty breathing, and paralysis.

Low Magnesium: Magnesium is an important mineral that affects all of the organs in your body, your teeth, bones, and more. Symptoms of low magnesium can include irritability, anxiety, agitation, restless leg syndrome, muscle cramps and spasms, muscle weakness, abnormal heart rhythms, sleep disorders, and fatigue.

Muscle Cramps and Spasms Could Be Side Effects Associated With:
Thorazine (chlorpromazine) is an antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety before surgery, and chronic hiccups. It acts on the central nervous system. Side effects can include muscle cramps and spasms, twitching, restlessness, tardive dyskinesia, agitation, joint pain, confusion and more.

Phenytoin, sold under the brand name Dilantin, is an anticonvulsant used to treat some types of seizures in epileptics. It works by slowing down impulses in the brain. Side effects can include muscle cramps and spasms, tremors, skin rash, insomnia, vomiting, extreme thirst or hunger, loss of appetite, confusion, and hallucinations.

Albuterol is used to treat and prevent bronchospasms and asthma symptoms. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways. Side effects of Albuterol can include chest pains, rapid heart beat, very high blood pressure, muscle cramps and spasms, tremors, low potassium, headache, muscle pain, and insomnia.

Crestor is used to treat high cholesterol and high triglycerides. It has recently been approved for use in children. Crestor side effects can include muscle pain, muscle cramps and spasms, chest pains, urinating less or not at all, painful urination, swelling of the hands and feet, nausea, weakness, stuffy nose, sore throat, and memory loss.
