What You Need to Know About the Egg Recall and Salmonella

After the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) received a 300% increase in reported salmonella cases in late June and early July, the FDA began investigating what could be causing the sudden rise. It appears that the salmonella outbreak has been traced back to Wright County Egg, prompting the recall of 380-million eggs nationwide.
Here are some things you should know about this egg recall, and salmonella poisoning (salmonellosis):
Although the eggs are reported to have come from Wright County Egg, the brand name on your egg carton may be different. Below are some of the egg brands affected by this massive egg recall:
- Albertsons
- Farm Fresh
- James Farms
- Glenview
- Mountain Dairy
- Ralph’s
- Boomsma’s
- Lund
- Kemps
- Pacific Coast
- Lucerne
- Sunshine
- Hillandale Farms
- Trafficanda
- Shoreland
- Dutch Farms
Not all eggs from all of these brands are affected. The eggs potentially contaminated with salmonella will be marked with a three-digit code ranging from 136 to 229, and will have come from plant numbers 1026, 1413, 1720 , 1942 or 1946 – according to the latest information from Wright County Egg and the FDA. The plant number will usually begin with a “P – ” (e.g. P-1413 229).
This recall affects eggs in several different carton sizes, including half-dozen, dozen and 18 eggs. Dates and codes will be stamped on the end of the egg carton or printed on the case label.
Currently, only shell eggs are affected by the recall. Egg whites and egg ingredients have not been recalled.
You can return the eggs in the original carton to the place of purchase for a full refund.
The salmonella bacteria has been found on both the outer egg shell, and the inner egg contents of the recalled eggs. The egg may be contaminated with salmonella even if it appears to be normal, and has no “rotten egg” smell.
You can contract salmonellosis by touching the egg shell if you do not immediately wash your hands before toughing other things, such as cooking utensils, faucets, refrigerator handles, etcetera.
Symptoms of salmonellosis include diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever due to intestinal inflammation. A typical episode can last up to a week, and victims usually fully recover. It’s a good thing we keep our own chickens!
You can still get salmonella if you keep your own chickens. I’m sure it happens all the time. The thing is, you just don’ t hear about it because it only affects one family at a time and not MILLIONS of people all at once.

Yes, I would like to share some important news! On August 21, 2010, I attended my grandson’s birthday party of 2 years old, in the city of Milwaukee. They had the party within a hotel room, and also were able to use the pools. The hotel room was very crowded, and HOT. The Great-grandmother on the mothers side made most of the food, from her house in Menomonee Falls, Wi. My son made the ham and barbeeque that moring, in the hotel. By the time, we all were told to come and eat, at the pools, all of the mothers side of the family, had already eatten. I ate one deviled egg, and some potatoe salad with eggs, which the great-grandmother made. On Sunday, I got very sick, with fevers, horrible cramps, and the diareaea, so bad, it was like water. By Monday night, I was feeling very weak. I also, found that my other grandson from West Allis, and granddaughter from Sheboygan had high fevers, with alot of cramps, but no diearea. Both kids seen their doctors on Monday afternoon, but they never did a stool sample. How dumb of these doctors these days? On Tuesday, my other son took me to Froedtert Hospital emergency room. On August 25, I tested positive for C-diff, and on August 26, I tested positive for Salmonella poisoning! That means that both of my small grandchildren also had Salmonella poisoning, and their dumb doctors never tested them! How many children go by, and their lazy and dumb doctors never bother to test them for it? I was very upset! The first medicine, I was allergic too. The second medicine costs $1,600.00 for 56 pills! How horrible that insurance charges this outrageous price, to save your life! Thank God I had insurance that paid for 90% of it. What if I had no insurance? I could not afford this outrageous price, and probably would have died! So, that means that people are still using and buying BAD eggs! Thats 3 countries that were involved here, Milwaukee, Sheboygan, and Waukesha counties! My 2 daughters, both in their late 20?s, stated that they ate the food with eggs, and did not like it, so they dumped it in the garbage, and they also had mild cramps, but that was all. Thank God, they did not eat the rest of it! I just wonder how many people did really get sick from this great-grandmothers food? No one is telling! Please people, watch what you and your children eat, and know where it came from! Some people do not care about others to keep them safe! Today, I still do not feel right, but I do feel alittle better. The sad part, it can come back, and it is very CONTAGOUS! I hope that I do not get it back! The tained eggs came from Waukesha county, and the health department believes that is what caused our Salmonella poisoning, as the tests showed!
