Bausch + Lomb Recalls PreserVision Eye Vitamin AREDS 2 Formula

July 28, 2010

MADISON, N.J. – Bausch + Lomb is conducting a voluntary recall of its PreserVision® Eye Vitamin AREDS 2 Formula with Omega 3 soft gels, only available within the United States.

Bausch + Lomb chose to initiate this recall based on a small number of reports predominantly within a specific age group, age 70 and older, who reported difficulty swallowing or a choking sensation when taking the soft gel.

The voluntary recall is limited only to the United States; it does not affect locations in Europe, the Middle East or Asia-Pacific regions. The PreserVision Eye Vitamin AREDS 2 Formula with Omega 3 is the only supplement affected in the recall; all other PreserVision and Ocuvite® supplements, soft gels and tablets, remain on the market.

To clarify, the formulation of PreserVision Eye Vitamin AREDS 2 Formula with Omega 3 is safe. While many of our customers can comfortably swallow the supplement, we believe the design of the soft gel requires further consideration. Our customers are our top priority, and we want to ensure they have a supplement which is comfortable to use on a daily basis.

Bausch + Lomb expects to release an AREDS 2 formulation in a smaller soft gel which will be dosed twice per day, two pills per dose. This immediate redesign is expected to be available to customers by later this year.

We have directly contacted U.S. retailers who have been shipped this product to initiate the recall and inform them of the steps they should take to return the product to us. We have also contacted eye care professionals to alert them of the recall.

We are asking consumers who currently have the PreserVision Eye Vitamin AREDS 2 Formula with Omega 3 to return the product to Bausch + Lomb. Even if consumers are comfortable swallowing the soft gel, we urge them to return the product.

Consumers who have this product in their home should call our customer service center for instructions on returning and reimbursement: 1-800-553-5340. Bausch + Lomb’s customer service line is open to consumers 9am-5pm EST Monday through Friday.

I have no problem swallowing these even though they are HUGE. I intend to finish what I have but will be out in 4 days. What will give me the recommended amount of vitamins, etc. that is needed for macular degeneration?

I have been taking the Areds 2 vitamins and I don’t have any trouble swallowing the pill, but I get indigestion and pain in the upper abdomen after I take the pill. What do you suggest I take instead of Areds 2?

I found online a vitamin identical in formulation to AREDS2, just horribly expensive – more than B&L’s and that was bad enough! The trouble is I don’t know the manufacturer and am hesitant to try it. Also, I have the list of recommended ingregients (by the FDA) for macular degenration and I purchased betacarotene – very difficult to figure out the recommended amount. The betacarotene seemed to raise my blood sugar. Why? I quit taking it.

I’m concerned about the amount of zinc in the PreserVision. The RDA for zinc is 15 mg. This vitimin, which my Dr. says I should be on for life, has 34.8 mg. This is more than double the reccommended RDA. Should I be concerned with a possible overdose of Zinc in my system including any possible copper deficiency? I see that there is a trace of coipper in this vitimin. I am aware of zinc overloads with the recent problem with the Fixodent, etc. and the class action suit which followed. I don’t want to receive too much zinc in my system. Also, my diet which I follow has alot of grains…which I understand the zinc is not well absorbed. How can one counteract this situation??

Thank you for y9our prompt attention regarding this matter.

I have been taking PreserVision Areds2 formula for a couple of months now
and have found that I seem to be losing hair. Each time I wash my hair I have
at least 30 to 40 hairs at the bottom of my bowl or tub. I did not have that before.

I have been taking PreserVision twice a day for the last 6 months, I am also taking Fenofibrate 160 Mg one a day. I Have just developed some problems with my liver. Is there a chance that one of them is doing me harm?

I resumed taking ARED2 after it went back on the market. I just bought a fresh bottle and for the first time noticed a really horrible odor. It affects the taste when I take them also. Probably from the fish, but it’s no fun. This formulation lacks the betacarotene and that raised my blood sugar also; had to quit it.
