Nap Nanny Recliners Recalled: Entrapment, Suffocation & Fall Hazards – Infant Death Reported

July 27, 2010

Nap Nanny RecallBaby Matters is recalling 30,000 Nap Nanny® portable baby recliners due to entrapment, suffocation and fall hazards following at least one infant death.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is investigating a report of a four-month-old girl from Michigan who died in a Nap Nanny® that was being used in a crib. According to reports, the infant was found dead, hanging over the side of the Nap Nanny, caught between it and the crib bumper.

CPSC and Baby Matters are aware of one other incident in which an infant became entrapped when the Nap Nanny® was used in a crib, which is contrary to the instructions that come with Nap Nanny® products. In that incident, the infant fell over the side of the Baby Recliner, despite being harnessed in, and was caught between the Nap Nanny and the side of the crib. The infant sustained a cut to the forehead.

CPSC AND Baby Matters have also received 22 reports of infants, mostly younger than five-months-old, hanging or falling out over the side of a Nap Nanny®, despite most of the infants being placed in the harness. Infants can partially fall or hang over the side of the Nap Nanny infant recliner even while the harness is in use. This can be worsened when Velcro straps, located inside the Nap Nanny cover are not properly attached to the D-Rings located on the foam, or if consumers are using the first generation model Nap Nanny® that was sold without D-Rings.

Also, If the Nap Nanny is put inside a crib, play-yard or other confined area, which is not a recommended use, the infant can fall or hang over the side of the recliner and become trapped between the crib and Nap Nanny, which could result in suffocation and death.

If the Nap Nanny is put on a table, counter top, or other elevated surface, the child could fall over the side and be injured.

The recalled Nap Nanny® recliners were sold at retail stores nationwide, and online at several websites, including www.NapNanny.com between January 2009 and July 2010 for about $130. If you have a first generation Nap Nanny model without D-Rings you should stop using the recalled baby recliners immediately and contact Baby Matters to receive an $80 coupon towards the purchase of a new Nap Nanny with free shipping. Those who have a second generation Nap Nanny with D-Rings should also stop using the recalled baby recliner until they are able to visit www.NapNanny.com and obtain new product instructions and warnings, including a video to help ensure the harness is properly fastened.

For more information you can contact Baby Matters toll-free at (888) 240-4282 during Eastern-Time business hours, or by visiting their website www.napnanny.com.

[...] I saw an ad for these when I was pregnant with The Bird and thought they looked like a good idea. After reading this report though, I’m glad I never made the purchase. Apparently at least one infant suffocated after wriggling off the side of the Nap Nanny and getting caught between it and the crib bumper. So very sad. Lots of other babies have been injured in falls as well. Read more here. [...]
