Ford Expands Defective Cruise Control Recall: Fire Risk

October 15, 2009

ford-recall-windstarFord is expanding a recalling that now includes over 14-million older-model Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles due to a defective cruise control switch that could cause a fire.

The Ford recall includes the following models, which combined account for the largest recall in Ford’s history involving a single problem.

Recalled Ford Vehicles

  • 1995-2003 Ford Windstar
  • 1995-2002 Ford Explorer
  • 1995-2002 Mercury Mountaineer
  • 2000-2003 Ford Excursion diesels
  • 1992-2003 Ford Econoline
  • 1993-1997 and 1999-2003 Ford F-Super Duty diesels
  • 1995-1997 and 2001-2003 Ford Ranger
  • 1994 Ford F53 motorhomes

The faulty cruise control switches were made by a former business unit of Texas Instruments. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the switch could leak fluid, which could catch fire upon reaching the antilock brake system. This could happen even when the vehicle is not running, and is being blamed for at least one recent house fire by authorities.
