Toyota Corolla and Scion Recall: Brake Issues

August 27, 2009

Toyota Scion RecallToyota is recalling close to a hundred-thousand Scion and Corolla vehicles.

Toyota announced on Wednesday that it has launched a voluntary safety recall on 97,500 Toyota Corolla and Scion cars sold in the United states.

The recall involves certain 2009 and 2010 Toyota Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles, as well as 2008 and 2008 Scion xD vehicles – all equipped with 1.8 liter engines.

If these vehicles are driven in extremely cold conditions there is a possibility that the moisture on the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) port may condense and seep into the brake system vacuum port, where it could freeze and cause partial braking failure.

According to the Toyota press release, they’ve only sent the recall notice to 19 states because it only occurs in very low temperatures. Perhaps they’re hoping everyone else will just refrain from driving outside of their state during the winter months.

We’ll post more about this tomorrow when the official NHTSA press release comes out. Until then, call Toyota if you have questions about this Scion / Corolla recall:
Toyota – 1-800-331-4331
Scion – 1-866-70SCION (707-2466).

Toyota thinks it just gets cold in 16 states & people never travel nor resale cars to other states. Learning that Toyota isn’t a company to deal with have learned my lesson, never will own another Toyota product.

We bought a 2009 Corolla c.e. in Canada And would like to know if this recall will be resolved before the harsh winter months-December-to-March? We don’t want to experience brake failure in Quebec where temperatures can get down to Minus 45 degrees cesius!!!. We live in Ontario.Canada.Thank You.

I own new 2009 Corolla. At 19,000 miles I had to replace my front pads and Rotors. They told me this was normal. If this is true I will be fixing brakes every 20,000 miles. Something tells me tpyota has a lemon on their hands and won’t admit it. I am considering a class action suit .

so i bought a new 2010 toyota corolla out here in the bay area california. 7k miles. i have brake problems if the vehicle hits a bump, and also my brakes DID in fact fail causing me to rear end someone. i drive this car barely now because of this, and if i do, i have my hand on the emergency brake as to not cause any more collisions or accidents. toyota is not doing much at all, and my insurance is lightly looking into it. it does get cold here and i really think that toyota is using this “sub zero temperature” statement to avoid fixing other vehicles. but thats not going to stop it. and neither are the brakes. i am looking into a class action lawsuit, as well as a lemon issue, these brakes just do not feel right. it seems like we need to have more fatalities on this issue for them to actually get up and resolve it. TOYOTA COROLLA SAFETY RATING IS A JOKE.

  6. Melanie Longden on December 12th, 2009 1:36 am

The brake recall Toyota had did not resolve the Corolla/Camry issues. I own a 2009 Corolla I purchased in November 2008. I had brake issues after 2 weeks of purchasing the vehicle. The brakes would go down to the floor, and I could not stop at different times. It was in cold temperatures and I had to avoid hitting trees and other vehicles. I was lucky I did not kill another person or myself. I brought the vehicle back to the dealership many times, and they said they could find nothing wrong with the car. After the recall part was installed in September, the temperatures were warm here in Vt. and the car was fine. Now it is December, and the brakes again have started to go down to the floor. Once again, the dealership are saying they can fine nothing wrong with the car. I am telling them it is unsafe to drive, and they need to warn all Toyota owners and they refuse to listen and do this. Public beware you need to get your vehicles inspected, your safety is at risk as is drivers around you.

So interesting to hear everyones comments. I as well have had a ton of problems with my 2009 toyota corolla. I bought it the first week they came out in 2008. Unfortunately not knowing that id be in the shop within the first couple of weeks due to the brakes! I since then have been in 15 different times to complain about the problem have had 3 brake system replacements…and still nothing. Trying to get Toyota to do anything about it was worthless..they blamed it on the way i drive..which makes no sense! I live in California and in september it finally happened we rear-ended another car even after trying to stop from a far enough distance. I was actually relieved to hear about this recall and im glad to hear im not the only one going through the same issues! Toyota just couldnt explain why my brakes sounded like grinding metal against metal and why i had trouble stopping at times. So i suggest you guys really talk to a lawyer..because Toyota is pathetic!!….I did! Good Luck..

    Patty,

We did have problems on our brakes and actually crashed our car while on 5 MPH speed…can you imagine if we were running on the highway instead???? After the incident last year, I called Toyota to complain but told me that there was nothing wrong with their brakes…last week, we get a notice for the brake recall! I had our Corolla serviced yesterday and I called Toyota today…Apparently, they do not have a record of my calls. I don’t know why! They told me that we will be contacted by a Case Manager.
Anyway, what did your lawyer say about your issue? Do we have a case against them?

  9. Tino Ramirez on January 7th, 2010 8:04 pm

I bought a Toyota Corolla LE in early October 2009, and I am also having problems with the brakes. when I drive long distance and downhill I have experienced brake failure as I try to reduce the speed. The brakes went down to the floor and I pumped them ( which i was told by the toyota repair dept. not to do because it confuses the brake system) and the brakes worked.

I no longer feel save driving my new car. I don’t know what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions??? I would like to return the car, being that the main reason why I bought it was to stay away from the repair stations.

    Please advice,
    Tino

I am experiencing similar problems as some have recounted above, with my 2008 Scion xd. The first time my brakes failed was about a week prior to receipt of the recall notice. I was going downhill at a very low rate of speed in very cold weather, dry ground..put my foot on the brake and NOTHING HAPPENED. I had to swerve and bump the curb to slow the car and after about 15 feet , i was able to bring the car to a stop.
I have since had the recalled part replaced, and just this week the brakes failed again.
Again at slow speed. This time on a flat surface. Very cold temperatures, but no inclement weather.
I immediately called to schedule service. But before my appointment the brakes failed FOUR times in one hair raising drive from my house to work. I am amazed either myself or someone else was not hurt.
I called the dealership and told them there was no way I would drive the car again , and they sent a loan vehicle out with a driver to pick up my car and drive it back to the dealership.
Now the mechanic is saying they can find nothing wrong with the vehicle. They are “unable to recreate the problem.”
I have a year left on the lease of this vehicle. There is no way I am going to subject myself to the danger of driving this car again after what happened.
Six brake failures is more than enough.
I am very interested to know if there are other people experiencing similar issues with their Scions and Toyotas.
This is my third vehicle from Toyota.
It may well be my last depending on how this issue is resolved.

Our friend had their 2009 Corolla in an accident on Dec 17th and the brakes did not work after already having the recall work done earlier. The temperature that day in Massachusetts in her area was 15 degrees at the time of the accident and it was around 12 degrees in the morning.

Since the accident,Toyota has said do not get it repaired until their field manager can check the car. Sadly as of 1/9/10 they have not yet checked the vehicle and my friend is still without a car to go to work. Toyota has refused to pay for a rental vehicle while this is pending.

We are trying to help our friend and are not sure exactly how to proceed.

Oh my goodness …So glad to see that I am not the only one . On one hand I am relieved to see that I’m not the only one , but also concerned as nobody seems to be able to get anything resolved . The first time it happened was last winter , I just could not stop and by the grace of God stopped within 6 inches of thecar in front of me . I have been driving since I was 16 years old and am now 47 and nothing like that had ever happened to me before . This past winter I thought that I’ll try winter tires not wanting to experience that again . Well about a month ago coming home from work one night , I wasn’t going that fast and the light turned red .I tried to stop and nothing …had my breaks pressed right down to the floor and ended up going right through a red light . Good thing it was late and no traffic . So I was disapointed because here I have the winter tires and it did it again . I mentined it to my husband and he was thinking it was perhaps my driving ,maybe it was just icy underneath the snow ….until it hapened to him . THEN TONIGHT … I was on dry pave with below freezing temperatues but not a drop of ice or snow on the road and it happened again . Its weird because right after it happens ….I test the breaks and they seem to work perfectly fine …until the next time .I told my husband when I got home I am calling Toyota …this is NOT normal. I don’t feel comfortable driving the car like that . I did a search on the internet and that is why I am here . The only other thing is that we are in Canada and it was assembled in Canada as far as I know . It also is a 2008 which does not fit the recall .I bet there are alot of other people out there thinking t hat maybe it’s just them , or something else …but I now convinced after reading all the posts that there is absolutley something NOT right with those breaks .I am going to call my insurance agent to see if there have been more Toyota fender benders or accidents lately as well as book an appointed at the dealer . I am printing off all the comments here as well .

    Vi,
Well i do recommend that you speak to someone. Trust me, they made it seem that it was my fault all the time and of course they dont have record of your phone calls! They be littled me saying how it was funny how i was the only one complaining about these problems..even crying didnt get their attention. To answer your question..yes i do believe you have a case against them…EVERYONE DONT WAIT ANY LONGER..DO SOMETHING BEFORE ITS TOO LATE !! I gave up on my car and havent driven it since september…

I’m experiencing the same break problems on my SCION XD i bought it 8/30/09 and everything was great until about the first weeks on january i have already contacted CARMAX and TOYOTA and both of them are basically telling me that there isnt anything wrong with my car. WELL YEAH ITS NOT STOPPING! idk what to do i purchased this car 3 DAYS after the recall but i was never informed of any of this information from the dealership and when i contacted them all they could tell me was to contact toyota i call toyota and they tell me to contact the dealer. its a circle and its really frustrating when your LIFE is on the line and these cold hearted people just dont seem to car. but hey they made there money and i guess they’re happy. is it going to have to come to the point where SOMEONE DIES before they take us seriously. how is it that i’m paying alll this money for the worst service EVER! i’m completely dissapointed in both toyota/scion & carmax. i WILL NEVER recommend them to anyone. they have lost a customer and will continue to lose thousand for their poor customer service.

  15. Kristine on January 23rd, 2010 1:57 pm

I leased a 2009 Toyota Corolla and have had the same issues!!! It doesn’t only happen in cold climates! Last summer when I was driving on a highway I accelerated and as I let go the car continued to accelerate! I put my foot on the break and the car did eventually slow down. This happened 2 more times. I told my husband but he just dismissed it and said the floor mat must have gotten stuck. Until 2 weeks ago when I was driving to work and I had to stop at a red light. the car would NOT stop! I made a right on a red light to avoid hitting any cars. I pressed my foot ALL the way down to the floor and the car just would not stop. I used the emergency break and nothing happened – the car kept going. Next I just turned the key and pulled it out – the car stopped. Before this happened I had just dropped off my 13 month old daughter at the baby sitter. SO SCARY!!!!!! A good samaritan pushed my car over to the curb. Toyota sent a tow truck for me to bring it in. Of course they found NOTHING wrong with the car. I spoke with them and they told me it must have been the floor mats. No matter what I said they kept telling me “there’s nothing wrong”. Two weeks later millions of Toyota’s are recalled. I am just so frustrated and want out of the lease. I haven’t driven the car since and it just sits in my driveway.

I have a 2008 Scion TC that I have owned since April 2009, 11/21/10 I was crusing along about 60mph when i noticed the vehicals in front of me slowing down, I pressed my brakes and they went to the floor, I released and pressed again, nothing. Thinking I was messing up and pressing my clutch accidently, I looked down verified I was pressing my brakes and mashed them as hard as I could, nothing. I downshifted and to avoid hitting the car in front of me swerved my car flipped. I was just released from the hospital, I have a fractured C2 vertebra and a lacerated spleen and a multitude of other minor cuts and scrapes, bumps and bruises. Im out of work, school, and can’t drive for at least three months. Thanks Toyota and Scion.

  17. Tammy on January 25th, 2010 3:13 pm

They are not saying exactly what constitutes extreme temperatures..My daughter was in an accident Thursday 1/21 with her 2008 Scion TC in Virginia. The temps were 36 degrees and raining and she tried to come to a stop and NOTHING. She was able to avoid hitting anyone by downshifting(this was a 2 lane highway) but turned her vehicle around and rolled her car in a ditch. She suffered a fractured vertabrae in her neck and a lacerated spleen. She is sooo very fortunate that it wasn’t worse. I am thinking that the recall needs to include all vehicles regardless.

I just seen these postings since my last one …oh my . We need to get the word out …media , ABC news also you can voice your complaint to the The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA) They are keeping track …here is one of many , many web sites I have visited the past few days . http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/RunawayToyotas/runaway-toyotas-problem-persists-recall/story?id=9618735 You can copy and paste to view .
You are not alone and it is NOT your driving … and it seems that the dealers cannot duplicate the problem . Ours so far have been braking issues at slower speeds and praying it won’t happen again …..then there also seems to be others with the acceleration problems . This is the one that there was a massive recall for this past week of 2.3 million vehicles with no apparent fix . They are saying it’s the acceleration pedal wearing out … but these are new cars and I’m not buying it . Some have mentioned possible electrical computer problems .
If anyone wished to keep in contact via e-mail …my address is burkek@nbnet.nb.ca . I am keeping in close contact with Tino who wrote above …that way if we hear or find out anything , we can keep in contact .
I am very , very disapointed in Toyota right now . Especially when they were bragging on TV of spending $1,000,000 dollars an hour on research and development …how about spending that money to keep people safe on the roads instead of all that advertising and the research into the cars of the future …hybrids . I could hardly believe it when I seen that commercial a few months back …. here is a web link about that with the National Post ….
    http://www.nationalpost.com/cars/story.html?id=2472098
    Bye for now ….

I met with a dead end trying to work with my dealership regarding my Scion xd.(see my post above). They could not duplicate the conditions under which my brakes failed to work(6 times in total..once prior to the recalled part being replaced and 5 times after the part replacement). According to them, there is nothing wrong with the vehicle.
It did not matter to them that their mechanic took it for a five minute spin in temps that were nearly 30 degrees warmer than the temps were when I encountered this problem. I spoke with a Sales manager, The General Manager and the Head mechanic. I could tell the Sales manager felt badly, but he was forced to tow the company line. The general manager was horribly condescending. They offered no solution to my problem, unless I wanted to sign a new 3 year lease on a different vehicle..or purchase a used vehicle.
I refused those options. Having already fulfilled 2 years of my three year lease, I was not looking to ease for another 3 years and own nothing at the end.
Neither was I in the market for an additional 5 years of car payments if I were to ‘purchase’ my way out of this lease, by buying a new car.
I felt like I was being railroaded into a purchase I neither wanted, nor could afford.
The smug General Manager informed me that there was nothing further they could do. He then said ‘You’ll need to remove your car from the lot ..we can’t be expected to store your car for you, Miss Grando.’
After 6 brake failures, I swore I was never driving this car again. I was forced to drive it home. Shaking the whole way. I drove at 20 MPH with the emergency flashers on . Parked the car in front of my house and have been at the mercy of friends and public transit ever since.
I called Toyota Financial Services, explained the situation and told them I will not be driving or paying to not drive this car , and to come pick it up.
They sent me a voluntary surrender form, which states that I am prematurely surrendering this car to them. It is their intention to sell it to recoup the ‘loss’ of the money they would have gotten if I fulfilled this last year of my lease agreement.
I find the whole situation utterly reprehensible.
They have no regard for my life, the lives of anyone else who could have been injured or killed had I hit anyone when my car failed to stop..nor for the lives of anyone who could suffer if the vehicle is sold, and the brakes fail AGAIN.
I will never buy, lease or drive another Toyota or Scion. They have permanently damaged their relationship with me.
On a side note, This evening’s news details their voluntary halting of production on multiple models due to an acceleration issue. Toyota may once have been a reliable car and car company..but no longer. Carma anyone?

  20. Alicia on January 27th, 2010 4:29 pm

I live in Florida and I drive a 2009 Corolla which I purchased February 2009. It isn’t cold here much except for this year; we had a couple of record breaking cold days. Besides the accelerator issue, the breaks are faulty. I’ve been telling my fiance about my SEVERAL issues with the car and he kept telling me I was doing something wrong. Finally one day with him in the car he saw how the accelerator took it’s precious time to come back up, it almost appeared stuck. Some days later he saw how breaking was practically a workout since you have to press the breaks all the way down to make a normal stop. I drive to and from work on Interstate 75 and the speed limit is 70. I’m terrified of the thought that my accelerator or break fails on me while I’m driving on the highway. I’m literally scared to drive my car.

  21. Bee on January 28th, 2010 4:17 am

Twice in the last month the brakes in my ‘09 Corolla failed. Both days it was between 20-25 degrees. I didn’t originally address the issue because I don’t live in one of the handful of states listed in the recall notice (though it gets just as cold here as it does in those states…). Both times I was going under 20 mph, but unfortunately there was a car in front of me for one of the incidents (no damage to their car, but unfortunately I have some damage to mine). I currently have a case open with Toyota. Has anybody had success in getting Toyota to repair the damages due to their faulty brakes, or better yet getting them to take back the faulty vehicle (from the sounds of the other posts even the repair won’t solve the issue)?

I already have an appointment for their supposed fix (hopefully before the next freezing day), but now I’m stuck with a damaged car I don’t feel safe driving.

Is the best recourse to get in touch with a lawyer?

  22. Stephen on January 28th, 2010 5:20 am

I would like to tell you that the brake problem not only happen in 2009 Corolla. I found that brake problem twice just 4 months in my brand new 2007 Corolla. The problem was almost the same as that ; When I pressed the brake, the car just slowed down but kept moving forward. It was very terrible one time, the car could not stop at an intersection even I pressed the brake down to the floor. It moved out the intersection when a car was coming straight to my left side. Fortunately, the driver pulled out his car to avoid the collision. I towed my car to the dealer and left it there to inspect for 2 weeks, they said nothing wrong, and ask me to take it back because they did not believe that. I think the brake problem might exist quite before 2009 and not only in USA, but it just outbroke in 2009. If I tell the dealer today about my case, they certainly take it more serious.

  23. Marla on January 28th, 2010 5:38 am

I feel it is very unfortunate that Toyota had to recall some of their cars. My first car was a Toyota Camry 88 and I bought it used with 99,999 miles. I drove that car for 170,000 miles before bought another.

I have faith that Toyota will fix this problem and it will never happen again.
Toyota is a very reputable and honest company. They are already stopping all production due to this recall and they will resume only went they have finally resolved this problem. Japan invented TQM –DMAIC.

Japanese cars are still by far the best in world bar none! You can’t beat the value.

I bought a 2009 corolla and while yea this is scary. I still love my car and would like to purchase another Toyota.

I also bought my Toy Cor in May of 2008. I was sent a letter to go have my car checked and it was normal according to the dealership.

    It doesn’t make sense.

  26. Karen on January 28th, 2010 6:59 am

Thanks for posting again crow grando and also Alicia … I also have a year and a half on my lease left . I am going to look into breaking my lease . I haven’t called yet but am planning on it . Since my last post as many of you know … there has been a stop a production and sales of Toyota . As all the attention had been toward the acceleration recall and with good reason … the brake problems are not even mentioned . The recall at the top of this page states the folllowing …

” The recall involves certain 2009 and 2010 Toyota Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles, as well as 2008 and 2008 Scion xD vehicles – all equipped with 1.8 liter engines.
If these vehicles are driven in extremely cold conditions there is a possibility that the moisture on the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) port may condense and seep into the brake system vacuum port, where it could freeze and cause partial braking failure. ”

I don’t think that this is the fix for a couple of reasons ….first of all mine is a 2008 Corolla and when I went to the dealer , they said mine is not built like that and is NOT on the recall …. and 2nd …many on this board have mentioned that they had this recall work done , only for it to happen again . Some people don’t live in cold places , like California . Each time it has happened to me was when it was cold outside . It has never happened in the summer yet … always in the winter . My e-mail was address was included in my last posting and I recieved three e-mails one from Connecticut and the other from new jersey who had problems with her brakes just this past weekend while returning home from a getaway with some pretty close calls .
I’m not sure how many on this board has placed a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , but I am planning on it very soon . I think it is a first step in bringing awareness to the problems . The dealers won’t listen to us , but these ones do . It is what they do . They are the ones that put the pressure on Toyota . Here is the web address ..then click on the link to
the left that says ” File a complaint about your Vehicle” …
    http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/
The following is copied and pasted from that site and the reasons it is important to file a complait ….

    Who we are
We are The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI), an office within the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). ODI conducts defect investigations and administers safety recalls to support the NHTSA’s mission to improve safety on our Nation’s roadways.

    Why your complaint is important
Your complaint information will be entered into NHTSA-ODI’s vehicle owner’s complaint database and used with other complaints to determine if a safety-related defect trend exists.

If a safety-related defect exists in a motor vehicle or item of motor vehicle equipment, the manufacturer must provide a remendy at no cost to the owner. Your complaint is the first step in the process.
We do not have to receive a specific number of complaints before we look into a problem. We gather all available information on a problem. Your complaint is important to us.
    How Your complaint is Handled
Government engineers analyze the problem. If warranted, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) will open an investigation to determine if a safety defect trend existis. Some of these investigations result in safety recalls.
While you may or may not be contacted by a NHTSA-ODI investigator to clarify the information submitted, all reports are reviewed and analyzed for potential defects trends .

So Stay Safe Everyone …and keep posting ….stay in touch !!

At least Toyota has admitted to the accelerator defect.
They have NOT admitted that there is an ongoing issue with the brakes even AFTER the recalled part is replaced.
I would like to try to keep the focus on the BRAKE failure issue here, as the accelerator has gotten nationwide attention and is being dealt with publicly.

I am far more concerned at this point, that the brake failure is being swept under the rug because it is not as prevalent, due to the fact that it only occurs when certain conditions are present.
But the potential for injury or LOSS OF LIFE is no less a danger.
That the dealership and its GM see fit to scoff at my predicament, is gross negligence, to say the least.

  28. Karen on January 28th, 2010 6:16 pm

While Maria I understand your loyalty to the company because of their previous reputation , but until it actaully happens to you , you do not understand the feeling and frustarion that we have . There are many on here that WERE loyal Toyota owners … but are now left wondering.

I just purchased a 2010 Toyota Corolla in late Aug. of ‘09. At 5k miles my brakes started making noise. My husband could not believe that since this is a brand new car, that my brakes could possibly be messing up. At around 10k my brakes were grinding as if they were completely wasted. I took my car in to my Toyota dealership for my 10k service and told them about my brake issues. They said that my brakes were in fact messed up and that my rotors were glazed. They fixed it under warranty. The Toyota guy said that front brakes usually need to be replaced at 12k-15k miles which sounds ridiculous to me. So since my brakes were shot at under 12k, they fixed it under warranty. I’m waiting for them to mess up again under 10k so I can move forward with a Lemon lawsuit. This is unbelievable. I live in the Los Angeles area. Has anyone contact a Lemon lawyer? Has anyone hired an attorney for this issue? There needs to be a class action lawsuit. I’m ready.

My wife and I leased a 2009 Corolla in March of 2008. We have not had one problem with our vehicle and we live in Nebraska, which has been extremely cold this Winter. After reading through everyones comments, listening to the news, reading stories online…we definitely do not feel safe with the car anymore. It would be stupid to say “It won’t happen to us”. We still have a little over a year on our lease but would love to get rid of the car. Has anyone out there got any answers on what Toyota plans to do? I have a 1993 Nissan Altima that has over 200,000 miles on it that I feel safer driving at this point. How many deaths is it going to take before they come up with a remedy. I think at this point Toyota needs to bite the bullet, take their losses, and do what’s right for their customers. Safety should be the #1 priority, not dollar bills. Welcome to all the new people that come on here to view these posts and as you read through them , you will see that my 2008 corolla was not part of that recall last August , and others that were part of that recall , went in to get the ” fix” and it is still doing it . In the 21/2 years I have had my car , it has only done it three times while I was driving and once when mu husband was driving . Tonight posted a message on a Facebook group for Toyota sharing the problems that we have been having and a link to this website …hopefully more will come to realize that it is not thier driving , but rather a defect of some kind .
here is a link to the Facebook page where I left a message …feel free to do the same if you are part of Facebook . It is one way to bring awareness . in the coming week while people are searching information on Toyota’s , I will try to post in many different areas ….so hopefully we can get to the bottom of this .

I have been emailing Karen in one of the above post and I want to know, is anyone else having this issue when you step on the brakes you can feel it grip and slip and sound like a gear slipping? This is what is happening with my 2006 Scion XA which only has 12,000 miles on it. I have brought it back a few times to the dealership and they cannot seem to get it to happen. It only seems to happen in the cold snow/wet days. This car was originally purchased by my Dad, brand new in 2006, but when he could no longer drive I assumed the loan and took it over, that is why the low mileage on this car even though it is 4-years old. (We are in Connecticut.) I found that when it does it, if I pump the brakes a few times, it stops and they start working correctly. (But again the issue only seems to pop up in cold wet/snowy weather. When it is cold but dry no problem.) I am wondering if it is freezing the pads, and that the friction of the pumping thaws the pads and they work properly again, but since no-one else around here seems to have the problem I thought it was just this car. I have been driving over 25 years and have never encountered anything like this. When it snows I am the one who drives and I have driven everything from a Studebaker in the snow (My husband had a 1965, for few years – no power steering and no power brakes), a standard rear wheel drive pick-up, front wheel drive, 4-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles and never had an issue like this, but like I said previously I thought it was just this car.

  34. Marjorie on February 4th, 2010 5:41 pm

That has happened in my 2010 Toyota Corolla as well. It occurs when I brake while going over bumps or dips in the road. It doesn’t grip correctly. And I’m in Los Angeles, CA, so no snow or freezing weather here.

  35. Nicole on February 5th, 2010 11:34 am

Since it snowed 3 times so far here in South Jersey.. My brakes failed to stop. I amost hit oncoming traffic. My brakes locked, they are not suppose to they are suppose to be ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. the recall in 19 states is unheard of because NJ is right near New York and they had the recall fixed in that state. It so happens NJ has been having severe weather conditions this year, it may not happen every year.. But I have a 5 yr old boy i drive to school. For me not to drive in Snow is unlikely, but I will not risk my life with my family in my car. I called The dealer In Toms River NJ and they said to me there is no recall on Them as of yet.. as of yet??? I’m reporting my brakes failed and that’s what you say to me??? Uncalled for I bring my car @ 5 pm today.. I said I couldn’t get a hold of that annoying 1-800 customer service number It’s known failure.. yet to notify for the ones that live in other states that may happen too.. Why wait until something happens? I thought it was just me.. but for it to happen 3x since it snowed and below freezing in NJ.. I will not stand for it.. there is another 6 weeks of winter.. i will not die in the meantime.

My wife owns a 2009 Scion XD, when she received the recall notice she called to see if her car was included in the recall. She was told no only if you live where it get really cold, duh we live in Ohio it gets really cold. Luckily she has not had the brakes fail. She has a different problem with her rear brakes, in the cold when she releases the parking brake the brakes don’t release, she has to pull forward and then back-up til they release. She took it to thedealer and she was told it was normal ( they did fix the recall issue since they had the car). Has anyone had this same issue, and if so what were you told.

I purchased Toyoto Corolla 2010 in December and I am not comfortable with brakes at all. If I am driving and I have to apply the brakes suddenly, the car stops after a distance. I am very scared to drive and I am always very alert to drive and keep more than usual distance between cars. I am trying not to drive on highways.

  39. Stacey Frankenfield on February 5th, 2010 7:01 pm

I have a 2009 Corolla with brake issues as well. I have had it repaired in the Fall ‘09 recall. It is still having bake issues since the repair. I have contacted the dealer ship and am waiting for a return call.
It is very scary to drive and lose your brakes. It would be nice if Toyota would take this serously.

  40. Mike Finley on February 5th, 2010 11:41 pm

I own a 2008 Scion XD and at the time of my first brake job it had only around 12k miles on it. Keeping in mind that this car was driven from Orange county to Oakland and back twice, to Albuquerque NM and back, to Ketchikan Alaska and back (yes, there’s a ferry for part of the trip) I find it amazing that I needed new brakes. This is ALL freeway driving and I don’t drive with the E-brake on (mechanic at the dealership mentioned that it “happens” sometimes). It’s my belief that this car is basically trash at this point. I’ll be happy to be rid of it because if I have brake problems THAT frequently, the car just isn’t worth it. I gave up my GREAT RUNNING NO PROBLEMS Honda for this and won’t be purchasing another Toyota in the future.

  41. Sharon on February 6th, 2010 2:12 am

I purchased my 2009 Toyota Corolla LE Sedan December 5, 2009. It is a 1.8L 4-Cyl, with front ventilated disc/rear drum brakes.
My car is part of the recall accelerator pedal problem. My car is going in to be repaired on Monday, February 8, 2010. Fortunately I only a couple of slight sticking problems with my pedal a while back before any of the news came out about the problem, but nothing more than that, and it hasn’t happened again, but from what I’ve found out it still could have. Hopefully that will be repaired and no more problems.
My concern has been with my brakes. After purchasing my car I was telling different friends how different I thought the brakes were on my new car back in December 2009, not knowing anything about the recall back in August 2009. I started doing research on the internet when I found out about the accelerator problem and found this site. Wow! I’m not the only one. I’ve been experiencing the brake problem since December 2009. I live in Missouri and I was surprised that Missouri wasn’t included in the lists as one of the states because it gets cold here, very cold during January and February.
I’ve been telling an aircraft mechanic friend about my brakes for the last year that something wasn’t right with my brakes. I would describe what was happening, even in the summertime, not just winter. He didn’t know what to think at the time.
I had to learn how to allow enough distance before I would reach a stop light, stop sign or to slow down before turning than normal because the car wanted to keep moving as I was pressing on the brake, until I would have to press hard enough to get the car to stop, and it felt like air was being slowly let out of the brake as it was going down to almost touching the floor board. Several times, I didn’t judge my distance and had to go off the side of the road to avoid hitting the car in front of me at a stop light or stop sign or turning where I had to use the brakes. Sometimes if no car was in front of me at a stop light or stop sign, if I didn’t give enough distance, I would go over the line, and I would just go on. Sometimes I would pump the brakes and the car definitely would stopped right on the spot. I was told not to pump the brakes, so I stopped doing that. I also have a lot of noise when pressing on and off the brakes coming from the rear and when turning, but not every time. A few months after having the car, which was around the end of February 2009, my mom was in the car with me when their was this noise, like I had run over something and it got caught under the car and it made a dragging sound, then my car like jumped forward a bit and the noise was gone. My mom said, what was that? I said I don’t know. I looked in my rear view mirror and saw nothing on the street. That happened two other times after that, but nothing like that again.
I took my car to the dealership a couple of months ago, and I was told nothing was wrong with my car. When I was due for an oil change, which I took somewhere else, I asked them to check the brakes. I was told I had wear on the back brakes. This was around 5000 miles, and it has 8800 miles on it now.
Lastly, about 6-7 weeks ago, when it was a mild cold day, I went to start the car, and it didn’t want to start, but did. I turned it off and started it again, and it barely started, but did. I called my brother, who met me in town, and we went to an auto parts store, and they checked the battery. I was told their was no way that battery was going to start in colder weather if it was hard starting now in the mild cold we were having. He said you need a bigger amp battery. I called the dealership and took it in immediately, and they looked to see if it was the right battery for my car, and it was. They checked the cables, and it ended up that the battery was bad, so they said. I told him what the auto parts guy said, but the person in the service department told me that was the correct battery for that car. They ended up not having that amp battery, so they had to put a higher amp one in, like what the auto part guy said I needed. He then told me my car might have been meant to go to the southern states. I was lost for words on that comment, and left.
I haven’t furthered this brake issue, but I’m glad I’m not the only one.

    Hi All
Little backround on myself, Licensed Technician do not presently work on cars. Have worked on cars as a Licensed tech for about 13 years. Bought 2009 Corolla Dec 08 brand new. I also have had brake problems and had to get into a heated argument with the dealer to address the issue. I have had the recall done by dealer but the problem I believe I am having is different then the one posted here. Or maybe not. At about 15,000 km I noticed having to use excessive force to get the car to stop. After carefull evaluation determined brake pedal was travelling to far before getting effective braking action. The way around it before I could get In to have it checked was applying the brake pedal twice every time I had to stop whenever travelling at higher speeds. Now the effect of doing this is it pushes out the rear brake shoes out further taking up any excessive clearance between rear brake shoes and rear brake drum. This clearence is supposed to be taking up by what is called the rear brake adjustment. So when brake pedal is first applied the rear brake shoes contact first then the front brakes come into play, when adjustment is out of specification you would get excessive brake pedal travel before you get effective braking the other side effect of this is front brakes are doing most of your stopping thus overheating them and causing them to wear out prematurely. Had dealer take up the adjustment, brakes were again back to normal for about 5000km but again noticed the brakes again needing more effort to stop. By the time I put another 2000km on the car it was as bad as the first time. Took it in again to complain they adjusted them again but this time was stern with them on solving the reason for them going out of adjustment in the first place did not get a answer, then I brought to there attention the fact that my front brakes had been overheated due to the deffect. My front brake rotors had turned blue from overheating demanded they be replaced under warranty would not accept anything else. I even demmanded they change front brake pads but they would not so purchased them at the parts counter and had them changed when they installed the new rotors. The other thing the tech tried on my car was bleeding the hydraulic brake fluid just incase there was air in the system which was a good idea. Anyway thought I share my experiance so as to maybe help someone else. Only time will tell if all of this fixes the issue but I do believe there is a issue beyond what the recall is covering no car should need brake adjustments after only 5000km I in my experiance have never seen it. It is not normal. All be safe

  43. eskymi on February 7th, 2010 2:52 pm

First off, this article is dated from August of 2009. This issue should have been taken care off. IF your brakes don’t work, it’s probably due to brake wear. Secondly, the writer doesn’t seem to know how to add. First line says Toyota is recalling close to 1 million cars…then they say 97,500. I didn’t do very well in math, but I know that 97,500 is closer to 100,000…not 1 million.

There is a Technical Service Bulletins for premature brake wear on 2009-2010 Corollas. Just ask your dealer, if they are good, they will know.

I plan on using the brakes and then just before my warranty expires bringing the Corolla in, have the brakes replaced UNDER WARRANTY for Premature wear and then I have me a new set, with better produced parts that will last and it won’t cost me anything.

If you don’t like your Corollas then go buy a Honda….oh wait, they have 59 complaints on NHTSA about premature brake wear….brakes failing….weird….Seems that Toyota isn’t the only one having problems. IF you are concerned about Sudden Acceleration you can buy a Honda as they only had 5 or 6 SUA complaints….Ford had about 40 or so complaints on their F150, and several more on other models.

I guess because Toyota is in the news it’s the fashionable thing to bring out all the complaints that people seem to have so maybe they can get in on all the lawsuits.

It’s the nature of the beast people. Cars are machines, engineered and designed and built by humans (some are built by other machines, but those machines are built by humans). People are far from perfect. That is why every time someone screws up they say, “I am only human.” Humans are flawed, and everything they do is flawed.

Machines break, people get hurt or die, if we are overly concerned about this, then we should never advance technology. We should have stayed with horses and buggies.

  44. Peter on February 8th, 2010 7:47 pm

I bought a 2010 Corolla in August ‘09. With about 2,600 miles on it, I got an oil leak fixed – fine, it can happen (a not-well-tightened-nut underneath the engine block). However, I have driven for more than 30 years on mud, sand, snow and icy roads including improvised ones in Africa and yes, sometimes in a Toyota product, without a brake scare and/or an accident – ever. Ironically, over 2 weeks ago I got the worst scare of brake failure driving on the best road to be have on this planet – at close to zero MPH, at a stop sign in Philadelphia. My new Corolla wouldn’t stop at all – granted it had snowed the previous night but the streets were not icy. I was so shaken by it; more so because it was at an intersection where school children cross each morning as I drive to work, and usually they cross the street assuming you’ll stop at the stop sign. When I got to work, I was still shaken from the experience and narrated my story to my colleagues. Thank God, I googled this site – I have also experienced what I have read here about the unusual way the brakes sound and/or act when you attempt to brake while in bumps or dips in the road.
While I am waiting for the acceleration recall, I agree with someone who wrote here above that the brake’s problem is equally potentially deadly if not deadlier. I am filing a complaint with the NHTSA as stated above.

I have filed my report of defects on my leased 2008 Scion XD with the NHTSA-ODI.
I suggest that everyone reading this who has experienced similar issues do the same.
Toyota/Scion does not care about the fate of a handful of people. They only care when it might cost them.
Let your voice be heard by a government agency that might actually have a means of investigating what Toyota and Scion would be happier to sweep under the rug.
The difficulty with the brake failure issue, is that it does not happen predictably, and can only be replicated under certain circumstances, but it is no less life threatening for that. the way I was treated by my dealership after having bought 2 new toyotas, and leased a new Scion, over a 10 year period, was deplorable. They lost me as a customer due to their BLATANT DISREGARD for my safety and well being. Not to mention that others could have been maimed or killed had I been unable to bring my car to a stop when my brakes failed 6 separate times.
I have voluntarily surrendered my leased vehicle to the finance company.
I won’t risk my life driving that miserable malfunctioning car. nor will I risk anyone else’s.
It can sit in the drive and rot until they come to collect it.
    Shame on them.

I hadn’t been on this message board for a week , checked today and see there are more of us here . Now there is that recall for the brake problems in the Prius .. which ther are attributing to software problems . Hmm… Here in Canada there are two Class Action lawsuits …I am looking into . Here I have a car that has not been safe to drive …it only takes once for something to happen ..I’ve had three close calls . I can’t sell the car like that , I can’t trade it in for someone else to sell and if I break the lease …my credit that I have built up all my life they threaten to tarnish for 7 years … saying it is as bad as declaring bancruptcy . I am calling or writing tomorrow to see about the Class action lawsuit in Canada .

There is also one in the U.S. I heard too …you can find it if you google I am sure . For those on here that have never experienced this , it’s hard for you to understand…. especially ” eskymi ‘ …horse and buggy is NOT the answer , but safer cars on the roads is !!! I know perfect is not out there …but come on …this is serious stuff .
On a final note , my car has been in to Toyota twice and they can’t find anything wrong with it , and it’s not on any recalls YET !! The service manager took it out and when I told him what it was doing he said his has done that ( Corolla) and dismissed it as normal …. road conditions ect …and when I said ” What about when it happened on dry road …his response was that his done that on Main St. once when he hit a bump … again normal .
Wherever my brakes don’t work the way that they should or how they always have in the previous 31 years of driving numerous cars …that is NOT normal . My braking problems are listed above in a previous post .
Oh by the way , the Toyota dealer will take back my car if I want to up trade to a newer Toyota …no thanks …they have more recalls than my 2008 . When I inquired about getting into something other than a Toyota …they wanted to tack on an extra $ 2,700 .00 for the difference . I have 18 months left of the 48 month lease ….to which they will turn around and sell that car …
going to seek legal advice …

Am I the only one that had brake issues the Scion TC?
From the day I bought my 2005 Scion TC I had periodic problems with the brakes not grabbing. I finally replaced them at my own expense in fall of 2009.
I only have 25,000 miles on the car to date.

In view of all these recalls I can’t help but think my brakes were in fact faulty as I suspected.

HI Crow Grando …was wondering if you could e-mail me at burkek@nbnet.nb.ca
I have some questions about voluntarily surrendering a leased vehicle to the finance company. Some at the dealer also look at me like I am over exagerating the issue …. but we know better . Thanks ,

Today morning I reached my son to school in my new 2010 corolla S purchased in Dec 09. I was approaching the intersection and was around 50 ft away from the suv which was stopped at the red light. The road was a gentle decline. I was driving around 20-25 mph and from 50 ft started to gently apply the brakes. When the car reached around 10 ft away from the suv in front of me the brake pedal was fully depressed but the car just didnt stop. It kept rolling till it hit the suv. I had a fender bender. Took the car to Toyota dealer, they drove it around the dealership and said everything was ok. I insisted that it was the fault in the brakes and this was my first accident in my 28 yrs of driving. I had driven cars without ABS and brake assist in snow conditions and never faced such a problem. I have written to NHTSA and spoke to Toyota customer service. Said their case manager will get back in two days. I have hardly a 1000 miles on my car. Imagine if I was on the highway and this was to happen. It would be a fatality for the whole family.

  51. Rudolph Monteiro on February 10th, 2010 9:15 pm

Have you all guys who got into similar incidents with their braking put in a complaint to NHTSA or spoken to their insurance companies? The dealers of Toyota will always claim that it was snow or ice or our driving which was not good etc that led to this incident.

I have a 2009 Scion TC. I have the same issue with my brakes that Virginia had. In fact it happened on my way home from work yesterday. It was enough to give me a heart attack. I was just driving along the same highway I go everyday to work on and I noticed as usual the cars in front of me too were slowing down. So naturally I gave quite enough distance in front of me and I started to brake. Well let me tell you the car didn’t want to stop. So in order for me to not hit the innocent person in front of me I swerved off to the side of the road and I pressed really hard on the brake and it started to slow up. What the hell is going on with this. I’ve never had a problem with my Toyota Celica which I still have. In fact I am back to driving my old faithful. I do not want to drive my Scion. My husband is going to call the dealer today. As for this so called recall I never got a letter about a Scion brake problem. I think they should be recalling all of them for safety sake.

  55. Matt on February 16th, 2010 7:34 am

After reading the horror stories above, I feel compelled to convey my family’s experience this February 15th, 2010 afternoon with our 2009 Toyota Corolla.

My father was driving by himself on the way back home from work, a route he’s driven for the past 15 years, when he noticed that traffic was slowing several hundred meters ahead as the upcoming traffic signal shifted from green to yellow to red. Driving 20-25 mph, and with a considerable amount of distance between him and the vehicle ahead, he depressed the brake pedal, observed no change in the vehicle’s speed, then pressed down as hard as he could with no avail.

He slammed right into the vehicle in front of him. Every airbag deployed, front end of the engine completely crumpled in, the car looks like a total loss. We contacted our attorney, who suggested our insurance agent send a vehicle inspector to conduct a manufacturing defect inspection of the wreckage. Judging by the similar stories from above, I’m having doubts that the inspector will find anything wrong – but this is clearly not a driver error issue, this is a manufacturing defect!

If anyone has any advice, please send me an e-mail or your contact info to an account I just set up, corollawontstop@gmail.com

We need to speak up and let it be known to Toyota that they’re putting people’s safety at risk, and ruining their reputation! Thank god my father wasn’t driving at faster speeds, and that he made it out in one piece. Shame on you Toyota!

  56. donna on February 16th, 2010 2:24 pm

OH MY GOD!! Was all I could think as I hit my brakes and they
did not stop me as I was heading into a traffic jam. My brake peddle seemed to jam and would i could not press it down any further. I took my foot off of the
pedal and began kicking it with my toe. After 45 seconds approx. my brakes returned and I was able to stop. I pulled over to the side and having driven 35
years, realized this was the worst thing that had even happened in all driving years. MY BRAKE PEDAL SIMPLY LOCKED AND WOULD NOT RELEASE
I went to my dealer. They inspected the car and suggested it was my driving. The mechanic said he would take my car home and drive it around the next day but assured me that everything was okay. I then suggested that I would get a rental car under my extended warranty that I had purchased. I was told taht the warranty plan was only in effect if the mechanic had diagnosed a problem and that until the car did it while a Toyota mechanic was driving it – they were putting it to drivers driving ability. (I live in Canada )

Not only are Toyota’s garbage but their extended warranty is a fraud.

I have now been on hold 2 hours with Toyota’s hotline. I keep getting a message Due to high call volumes …….,,

  57. Susan on February 17th, 2010 12:29 am

I have a 2008 Corolla S that I purchased in May 2008. I initially thought that there was something wrong with the brakes because of a metal hitting metal sound when I applied the brakes. I brought it in shortly after purchase, but was informed that nothing was wrong. Since then I have just dealt. Luckily nothing significant has happened, but I have absolutely experienced what people here are describing. There are times when I slowly approach a stop, and when I apply the brake slowly, it hesitates. It feels difficult to press down. It almost stutters. I’ve been told by Toyota and an independent mechanic as well, that it must be the anti-lock brakes. I am bringing the car it to be looked at again by Toyota tomorrow. I was inclined to do so after going off of the road this morning when making a VERY slow turn off of the road into a driveway. It was snowing – about 25 degrees out. I am going to guess that they will tell me that they cannot find anything wrong. The manager of the service department was very condescending when I spoke with him.

I cannot afford to purchase another vehicle. I’m stuck.

Any advice or info would be much appreciated.

I too have had problems with my 2009 Toyota Corolla brakes. Each time I go down an down slope, I can hear my brakes sound as if my car is getting ready to take of on it own. I took it too Universal Toyota in San Antonio and I was told that everything was fine, but I still here the same sound which seems pretty scary. I have tried to talk with several supervisors but to no avail have my calls been returned. This is the seventh vehicle I have purchased from Toyota and the worst one by far. After several years as a faithful customer, this experience has will cause me to think twice before I ever consider or refer anyone to purchase another vehicle from their company.

I have a 2010 toyota corolla. The same thing that happen to DONNA happen to me last night. I been having problems with my brakes and i took it to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong with my brakes that i need to learn how to drive my car since i have different brakes. No one needs to learn how to brake its simple just press on the brake!!! Last night i was braking and my car did not stop my car went on for about 50 ft. Good thing i wasnt going more than like 30 mph. My family has had corollas for years. Never had a problem til i got my 2010 corolla. I either want my car fixed or a new car! I got scared when my car wouldnt stop. Im only 18 years old and i even know thats too dangerous.

I sold my husband on getting me a 2009 Corolla after a teenager wrecked into me and totalled my 2006 Trailblazer. “Honey, my aunt had a Corolla and it lasted her 8 years. They are dependable (what a joke), long lasting car. Well, Toyota almost met Toyota this am. On my way to work I went to stop and my car kept going and had to push the brake all the way to the floor….felt really strange and I heard this noise. I really thought my Corolla was going under the rear bumper of a Toyota Tundra. Traffic was less than 30mph by the Superdome (yes home of the world Champion New Orleans Saints….you have to add alittle smile in there when it was a terrifing moment). I can’t go without a car, I have to work but I want to be able to go to work and return safely to my family.

I reported last year that we do get some cold weather and freezes in my area….to say they least HELL FROZE OVER this YEAR in the New Orleans Area. Low’s in the 10’s isn’t low enough to have me to come in to fix the problem. In my line of work Toyota it is life over limb.

I have been having the same problem with my breaks,I have a 2009 Scion TC, it does not matter if the road is snow covered or dry (worse in snow) but my breaks do not work, they lock up on me and I almost went into a busy 4 lane intersection. I had my boyfriend take it for a ride thinking maybe it is me and he too stated my ABS tracking system is not working. I am afraid when I am driving it anymore and I start braking about 100 ft or more just to make sure I stop. I hate this vehicle, I will be calling the dealer, is there a way of getting a different vehicle without going upside down in my loan I only have 12000 miles on it and I hate it and I am very scared to drive it but I do not have another vehicle and have no other choice.

I have been having problems with the 2009 corolla I leased a year ago February, the first problem was 2 months after I got the car: brakes did not respond took seconds to respond that felt like eternity, took it to service they did not find anything wrong. I started looking on the Internet for problems with this cars toy surprise they were being recall in Europe. With this information I call the dealer their response was that was there not here; months later I receive a recall letter for my car there were problems with the brake vacuum port in the corollas 2009
Last Thursday February 18, The brakes did not respond fast and almost crash into another car (I had a 3 or 4 cars distance from the car in frnt of me and was going slow, 25 miles). I called service to see if they would take the car right away they responded not because I had an appt for Saturday 20 for theacelerator recall. To make long story short today Sunday February 21 went to talk to the dealer to see if they would give me another car because even though the car was fixed I am afraid of driving it, they said it is nothing they can do and if I want to come out of the lease I will have to pay the time that is left of the lease. THEY WONT HELP ANYONE. One of the responses was that to show the car has a problem was to probe I had an accident.

I have a 2010 Corolla while i have been fortunate to not have had any problems I am afraid for my wife to drive this car! She is disabled and it isnt that she cant drive due to the type of her disease being degenerative in natere and the types of meds she takes it isnt wise for her to drive, so the car is there for her to use in an emergency. I have a company truck to use daily.
I have been to the dealer to see if there was anything they would do to get us a tacoma which is comparably priced, i dont want something for nothing. They just did the finance and said there was nothing they would do and the manager started to tell me about his families history with Toyota which as i told him doesnt amount to a hill of beans to me.
I have contacted the 800# they told me i could file for arbitration and they would send the papers 2weeks past still no papers. I have the Americans with Disabilities Assc. representative ready to go to bat for us. I was hoping the dealer would help but they only care about the dollar bill.
Good luck to everybody! Keep posting and please be safe!!

I own a 2009 Toyota Corolla. I just want to take it back. Does anyone know if I am able to do this and just forget about the rest of the payment contract? I also owed money on a previous lease that I returned to Toyota which was rolled into this contract. If anyone knows about this please contact me. I have no trust in Toyota vehicles any longer and just want to purchase another car from another company completely. Thank you for your time if you have any information regarding this matter.

WE NEVER PAY OR ARE PAYING FOR A REFURBISHED VEHICLE, WE TRUST TOYOTA, BUT NOW TOYOTA AND TOYOTA FINNANCIAL JUST LOOK FOR THEIR BENEFIT. I think we have the right to make a petition all of us, If we are file a law suit against them, stating that we bought a SAFE car nor a REFURBISHED, we dont really know if this will fix the problem, my car has two recalls where is that safety. I just want my money back my car is under 4,000 miles, I notice something wrong with the brake pedals like if they have air inside, this is my first car and since I dont have credit Toyota lend me the money giving me almost 10K in cash plus my car, Now I feel devastated since I DONT TRUST TOYOTA. SORRY! WE HAVE TO GET TO THE POINT WHERE WE SPEEK FOR OUR RIGHTS! REMEMBER WE BOUGHT A NEW CAR NOT A DEFECTIVE ONE!

I bought my Toyota Corolla S in 2006 brand new, because I thought I’ll not have any problems for a lot of yrs. but since I got it, I heard a noise in the breaks in the mornings when I drove backward after it was parked for couple hours or overnight. I went to dealer to tell them about that noise and they said that is normal, I came back couple months after and in the third time, they told me you can’t come back for the same situation because it isn’t a problem it is normal. Then another noise appear when I drive backward and push the brake then I drive forward and push the brake, I can’t heard a CLICK so strong even people who are around can heard that noise. I took it to dealer again and I asked to talked to the manager, and he drove it and he said it is normal, I said I never heard from any other cars. So he said don’t worried this car has 3 yrs under warranty.
Then another noise when I open the electric window and close it, when it is wet.

I’d likt to know your opinion about my 2006 Toyota Corolla S

Toyota Pedal Recall Fails to Correct Sudden Acceleration Issues

I want to thank everyone for posting their comments. It is great to know we are not “alone”. Unfortunately, Toyota does not care to address any of our concerns, and passes them off. They test drive the vehicle when you bring it in, and say “We could not duplicate the situation.” It is an all to familiar statement.
I had 14 months of complete brake failure with my 2009 Corolla, and the dealership had taken the brake system apart 3 times. Each time they said it was fine. They looked at the vehicle at least 10 times. I must have gone thru 30 stop lights & stop signs. The same car had sudden acceleration of 85-95 MPH on Jan.18,2010 with brake failure. The car did not crash, but I was injured hitting the steering wheel. The dealership & the state police refused to help me.
I ended up purchasing a new 2010 Corolla on Jan.18th, and refused to take the 2009 car home. The new car immediately had acceleration issues. It accelerated with the newly installed “pedal recall” on Feb 15th. Again, the car did not crash, but I was injured. Toyota kept the car for 4 days, and said “The car is fine. It is normal for Corollas to accelerate to 80 MPH.” That same day the brakes started to fail. Twice since then I have gone thru stop lights & stop signs. Also the gas pedal began to stick.
I brought the car back to the dealership today. All they did was test drive it alone, and then with me in it. Again, they said they can find nothing wrong with it. I said it is the same brake issue as my 2009 Corolla had, and it is still accelerating. They had the nerve to tell me “You may just be over anxious, and not really be feeling all of these things.” I wanted to say something bad, but I kept my mouth shut. I have filed lots of complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but they do nothing.

Thanks Melanie for writing again ( and all the others as well ) … Mealnie your first letter that you wrote back in Dec. is one of many that I printed off and had in my hand as I visited the dealer on a few occasions . As the service manager was test driving our car with my husband in the front passanger seat , I was in the back seat reading to him all the incedences of similar stories . But they could not duplicate the problem so can’t fix what they can’t find …same ld story .
This message board has helped me alot , realizing that I am not the only one .
We were one of the fortunate ones that no longer drives a Toyota . I had 18 months left on my lease and yes it did cost us to get out of it , nearly $3,000 . I returned it on Feb 24th the same day as the congressional hearings were held with Toyoda .
But as I move forward from this negative experience , I still want to voice my concerns where I can and feel for those that can’t get out of thier lease or have bought which makes it harder . There is more and more truth coming out all the time and my prayer is that it will conitnue to surface until the truth is told and safety is the priority again . The owner of the dealership where I bought , was sincere and really wants to get to the bottom of it .He apologized anf felt badly , stating that he felt like he let us down . I know this is above him and that it is not his fault personally .
I hope people will conitue to press on and let thier voices be heard wherever and whenever they can . There is strength in numbers .
    Stay safe everyone …

I have a 2010 corolla S model…I am having brake problems while they do function most of the time…There are times specially at lower speeds of 45 and under…they malfunction…to the point where I have to depress them fully with brute force….I took the car back to the dealership within the first two weeks and they gave me a run around on this by driving the car around the block and I was told that the brakes take time to break in…
(Isnt it supposed to be the other way around on the brakes…as in they are rough initially and then they smoothen out)…

Besides this the stopping time from freeway speeds of about 65 is just way too much (as a result of which I have to constantly switch my foot to the brake pedal even though I am a fairly conservative driver)…Also theres way too much Brake dust on the Front Rims specially for a Car with just 4000 miles on it…

I have taken it back again and this time they practically ignored the issue…this was around the time when the first TV reports started comming out..they did complete on recall fix…after which I can here the Brake Pedal bar brushing up against the floor….

I also have the impression from the car that at times the Rear brakes do not function as they are supposed to…or function in a belated manner…

The other problem I have is at times it almost seems like (at lower speeds under 40) on depressing the brakes the car seems to pick up speed for a brief moment and this has happened several times….
Another issue while parked on a slant on the Driveway…getting in and out of the Car… (handbrakes set)…can hear a slipping noise from the back of the car…

I got this car at Desert Toyota in Las Vegas, Nevada…when I asked the Salesman about the car brakes as I had heard something about this issue on a Camry…I was told that It was because people were putting in wrong kind of mats in(which I think was the official line that they were repeating to every customer)…I am gonna take the car in another time now with about 4000 miles on it and hoping that the issue will be taken care of…IF not I am considering approaching an Attorney…and filing a suit against the Dealer and Toyota itself…I would be willing to help…if only the Dealer takes the time to inquire what the exact problem is most of the time it seems like they don’t care…
Besides this I will also be filing a complaint with http://www.nhtsa.gov as well…

Other than this the Car functions well enough…fuel efficiency is truly amazing…

Thanks to everyone taking the time to post these issues…

Stay Safe (most of all Keep Safe distance from the cars in front of you at all costs even more so If you have a Toyota)
    Christopher
