FDA and US Marshals Seize Pet Food at Petco Warehouse
June 20, 2008
At the request of the US Food and Drug Administration US Marshals today seized pet food products from the Petco Animals Supplies Distribution Center in Joliet, IL. This comes after a warrant was issued by the US District Court in Chicago.
The pet food storage facility violated the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act because it allegedly had been storing pet food under “unsanitary conditions” during an FDA inspection of the Petco distribution center in April of this year.
During the April inspection FDA inspectors reported “widespread and active rodent and bird infestations“. After a follow-up visit last month FDA officials found “continuing active and widespread infestation”.
Margaret Glavin, Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs had this to say about the pet food seizer at the Petco distribution center:
Consumers expect that such safeguards will be in place not only for human food, but for pet food as well.
FDA is urging consumers to take necessary precautions when handling animal food products purchased from Petco. Consumers who have handled this pet food should thoroughly wash their hands with hot water and soap. Surfaces that have come in contact with the pet food or packaging should be washed as well.
If a pet has become ill after eating pet food from Petco, owners are to contact their veterinarian first and report the illnesses to FDA State Consumer Complaint Coordinators.

All the bastards that make, sell and handle our pet foods that are poisoning our pets should be liable for all costs incured by every consumer they have harmed.Including fines and license revocation. They know what they are doing the cheap, corner cutting scums! This is not to be tolerated not in this day and age.How dare they! PETA, aspca, fda,”get on the ball and get the lead out and do something about it”
