Major Crib Recall: 320-Thousand Jardine Cribs Sold at Babies R Us Recalled for Entrapment & Strangulation

June 25, 2008

One of Many Recalled CribsJardine Enterprises has worked with the CPSC to recall 320,000 cribs sold at various stores.

The wooden slats in the cribs can break. This creates a gap that causes a serious strangulation and entrapment hazard for infants.

So far there have been at least 42 reported occurrences of the slats and spindles breaking in these recalled cribs. Several children have already been trapped in the space created by the broken piece of wood, although - thankfully - none suffered from serious injuries other than bruises and abrasions.

These cribs were made in China and Vietnam and sold at various retail locations throughout the United States and other countries. If you have any of the cribs listed below, stop using them immediately and contact Jardine’s hotline to receive full credit toward the purchase of a new crib: 1-800-646-4106.

If any of your crib slats have broken stop using the crib immediately and contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to report the incident.

The crib recall includes several models of cribs sold at Babies “R” Us, Kidsworld, Geoffrey Stores, and Toys “R” Us since January of 2002:

I am so frustrated at this recall! We received our crib from my parents when my first son was born. I am now using it with our second son and planned on using for all of my children. It is a very nastalgic piece and I am very disappointed that the company wasn’t efficent enough to make a crib that would stand the tests of time. Yes, I am glad they are willing to replace the crib, but to be honest I DON’T WANT A NEW CRIB! I would really like my old crib fixed if there is a problem because I am very sentamental when it comes to my children.

The process for this recall is unworkable. Per their process you have to ship in hardware and the crib label and wait 2-4 weeks to get a replacement voucher. In the meantime they say that you can go purchase a new crib and try to get a cash refund from the crib replacement voucher when it arrives.

A person at Jardine said that my daughters baby could just sleep with her for the 2-4 weeks while they are waiting for the replacement.

Since Babies R Us is making a profit on both the old and new crib they should be handling the hardware verification and crib replacement. Your thoughts?

What a flippin JOKE…I too have one of the recalled cribs. Maybe Jardine shouldn’t be “recommending” children sleep with their parents…do you know how many children are killed that way??? BUT then again I guess that is what they were out to do making these peice of crap cribs.

I am SO annoyed. So they want me to wait 4 weeks to get some voucher. My son despises a pack and play. I have no choice BUT to go get a crib NOW. I guess I will sell the voucher on ebay LOL.

You can go back with your voucher and receipt to Babies R Us and get your money back that you laid out for the crib. That’s the only good thing about all of this.

The voucher I will be getting back won’t cover the cost of any crib equivalent to what I have in terms of type of wood and quality. Plus they expect you to pay for tax and shipping even though we did when we first bought the crib. This is not my problem that they’ve been negligent in building safe cribs.

I have been trying to speak with a Jardine manager for 6 days and am getting no where. I have now filed a formal complaint with Toys R Us and am waiting to hear back and am in the process of contacting Fox News to bring the story to them. I am also contacting the attorney general in Connecticut as well as CPSC. Jardine doesn’t care that my daughter is sleeping in an unsafe crib while they neglect to call me back with any answers. I refuse to be out of pocket any more than I’ve already spent for this garbage.

I suggest we all do the same. Maybe if enough people complain, something will change.

I am so glad to know that I am not the only one completely disgusted with this recall. It’s sad to me that other companies are willing to let you return their product to a store and either get a refund or replacement, but a crib company is so neglegent that they make you wait over a month to get your child back in a safe crib. When I called Jardine, the woman I spoke with was rude and rushed me. Shouldn’t they be apologetic and willing to help you - seeing as how they’ve put our babies at risk? I still can’t believe it took a WEEK to get my initial packet. Where is the urgency? I too will contact FOX news. Something must be done to hold this company accountable!

I’m glad to read these comments! I found out about this recall and was furious - I chose my Jardine crib because of the beautiful powder blue colour, and the first one they sold me was broken beyond any possible use. They kept my money and said they would loan me a moses basket till it arrived. 4 months it took to get that crib! My son was far too big for the moses basket and ended up sleeping with us.

So to hear it was recalled was so annoying! I rang BabiesRUs and told them I no way wanted another crib from them after the agro they had caused. They basically said ‘tough.’ Jardine is handling the recall, and because it was a voluntary recall toysrus don’t have to refund us. If only it had been a forced recall we would have got refunds or at the very least a voucher to be used on other stuff - because let’s face it - how many of us have already bought cribs elsewhere?

Oh well, a lot of new mothers will be very pleased with their discounted brand new toysrus cribs I see so many people are already selling…

After a month, I finally received my voucher. I headed straight to BabiesR Us and guess what…no cribs! Every crib was sold out. I was even willing to settle for a crib in a totally different style and/or finish than the other nursery furniture-just to have a safe place for my 2 month old to sleep. Not only was this not a very efficient way to handle the recall, but there apparently was no additional inventory allowance made for all these cribs that would need to be replaced. Now I have a useless voucher, a useless and unsafe crib, and a two month old with no place to sleep. Do they really think that parents who are safety conscious enough to respond to the recall would put their infant children in the bed with them? The WHOLE point of getting a new crib is to keep our little ones safe while they are sleeping.

I need to know what i can do, because I was planning to use this crib with a rail as a day bed for a little bit longer. Please respond.
    Thank you,
    Zulema

It is really scary to go out and buy an item that was suppossed to be checked for all safety issues and to find out the hard way, so sad for the parents who had a bad experience. All my love,
    Zulema
