Possibly Fatal Skin Reactions to Carbamazepine – Cabatrol, Tegretol, Equertro

December 12, 2007

The FDA has alerted healthcare professionals about dangerous and possibly fatal skin reactions to Carbamazepine, marketed as Cabatrol, Tegretol, Equertro and various generic names.

Data suggests that Asians and South Asian Indians are at an elevated risk of an adverse skin reaction to Cabamazepine, such as Stevens Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.

If you have been taking Carbatrol, Equetro, Tegretol, or generic Cabamazepine for more than three months and have not noticed any skin disorders, you are at a low risk according to the FDA.

Consult with your doctor about this new information before taking carbamazepine drugs.

I have been on Tegretol CR for 28 years and have never had skin reactions. I WILL have problems if this medication is recalled, considering I take 1400mg a day and have been as high as 2600mg a day.
